Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester Police Department has issued an advisory after receiving a report of an unusual crime involving a stolen vehicle.

The owner called police Thursday morning to report his 2018 vehicle had been taken from his garage overnight. The owner said the key had been left in the vehicle and the garage doors were locked. So how did the thief get in?

A garage door opener in another vehicle that had been left unlocked in the driveway.

Police Capt. Casey Moilanen says if possible, garage openers should be removed from vehicles that are left outside a home. He says if they can’t be taken out, the vehicles should be locked.  He also says keys should not be left in a parked vehicle - even if they are in a garage.

Moilanen says besides making off with property in the garage, thieves can also gain access to the house.

As of Friday morning, the stolen vehicle had not been recovered. The theft occurred in the 2000 block of Hampton Rhodes Ct NW.
