I feel like it's one of the first official signs that winter is almost here: Rochester, Minnesota's winter parking rules go into place in just a few days. While many may have lived through a few winters here in Rochester, I wanted to go over what we need to know about the winter parking rules so it doesn't catch us off guard.

How Long Are the Winter Parking Rules in Effect?

The Rochester winter parking rules take effect on Monday, November 1st this year. The requirements will be in effect until April 1st, 2022.

There's a Certain Time of Day That We Need to Follow These Rules

Did you know that there are certain times of the day where these rules need to be followed? The City of Rochester's website says that the winter parking requirements are in effect between the hours of 2 AM and 3 PM.

Where Can I and Can't I Park When the Winter Parking Rules are in Effect?

The biggest rule is that on odd days, you can only park on the side of the road where the house numbers are odd. On even days, you can only park on the side of the road with home numbers that are even. Pretty easy to remember.

As for cul-de-sacs, the City of Rochester writes that vehicles "parked within the round part of a cul-de-sac must follow alternative side parking requirements." Also, if you're on a road that says you're only allowed to park on one specific side of the road, follow that and not the even/odd rule for winter parking. The even/odd rule also doesn't apply if you're parked at a metered parking spot.

Why Does Rochester Have These Winter Parking Rules?

The City of Rochester says that they have these rules for winter parking in place because it makes it easier for plows to come through and clear snow. That also leads to the need for fewer snow emergencies.
