BALTIMORE (AP) — The Kansas City Royals are the kings of extra innings in this baseball postseason.

Winning their fourth extra-inning game in the postseason, the upstart Royals edged the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 on Alex Gordon's leadoff home run in the 10th inning in the rain at Camden Yards. Mike Moustakas also homered in the 10th, a two-run shot.

Gordon's bases-loaded double was the big hit in a four-run third inning for the Royals, who built an early 5-1 lead before the Orioles chipped away.

The Orioles tried to rally in the 10th. Pinch-hitter Delmon Young hit an RBI single with two outs, but closer Greg Holland retired Nick Markakis on a grounder with two runners on for the final out in the rain shortly before 1 a.m. Eastern time.

Game 2 is Saturday afternoon. Rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura makes his second postseason start for the Royals against either Wei-Yin Chen or Bud Norris.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have strengthened their bench for the National League Championship Series against San Francisco by including catcher A.J. Pierzynski on the 25-man roster. Manager Mike Matheny said Pierzynski gives the team an experienced bat off the bench, and a third catcher that allows for use of backup Tony Cruz.

The 37-year-old Pierzynski replaces lefty reliever Sam Freeman on the Cardinals roster.

The Giants expect to add Michael Morse to the roster for the NL Championship Series. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that Morse looked good playing in the instructional league, saying that he had homered.

Morse is en route to St. Louis, where the best-of-seven series starts Saturday night.
