36-Year-Old Man Wounds Himself After Shooting at Officers in Owatonna, Police Say

Owatonna, MN (KROC-AM News)- A 36-year-old man is in custody following a shelter-in-place incident that involved multiple gunshots in Owatonna.

A news release issued by the Owatonna Police Department says the incident began with the report of a person in crisis leaving in a vehicle around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday. 

The incident would reach its conclusion about four hours later, according to the news release.

Responding officers found the vehicle on West Bridge St. and stopped it in the area of South Oak Ave. and Southview St. They saw cuts on the driver’s arm, the news release says.

Police say the driver, described as an Owatonna resident, became uncooperative with officers during the encounter.

He then reached for a firearm, began shooting at the officers then fled in his vehicle, the news release says. 

Shelter-in-Place Order

The motorist came to a stop in the 200 block of West McKinley St around 10:15 p.m., prompting a shelter-in-place in the area. 

Members of multiple law enforcement agencies, including SWAT Teams, responded to contain the area.

Police say the man then shot himself around 12:20 Thursday morning.

He was subsequently taken into custody and brought to a hospital for medical attention. His name and an update on his condition have not been released. 

No officers were injured during the incident. Police say the incident is under investigation.
