Minneapolis Speed Cameras Showing Success – Should They Come to Rochester?
A pilot program began on October 1st, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to test out speed/red light cameras. The cameras were placed in order to reduce the number of speed-related crashes and injuries.
It's been just over a month, and the cameras definitely seem to be doing their jobs.

Minneapolis Launches Speed Cameras
The city of Minneapolis wrote on their website that these cameras were put in place because of a new law. They write:
The pilot is the result of legislation from the state of Minnesota.
The new law addresses issues of:
- Fairness
- Equity
- Privacy
- Trust

Where Are the Minneapolis Speed Cameras
As of right now there are only 5 speed cameras in Minneapolis. However, KSTP wrote back in October that the city has plans to up it to 42 cameras if the first 5 go well (which seems to be the case).
The locations of the speed cameras are:
- Third Street North near First Avenue North in Downtown;
- Fremont Avenue North near West Broadway Avenue in Near North;
- 18th Avenue Northeast near Central Avenue Northeast in Northeast;
- Chicago Avenue near Franklin Avenue East in Ventura Village;
- Nicollet Avenue near 46th Street West in King Field/Tangletown.
Minneapolis Speed Cameras Reduce High-Risk Speeds by 30%
Recent data that was released about these cameras shows that they've already helped.
The city writes, "Across all five camera locations over the first month of operations, the rate of drivers recorded traveling 10 or more miles over the speed limit was reduced by almost 30 percent compared to the rate prior to installation."
Should Speed Cameras Come to Rochester, MN?
Because these cameras are doing what they're supposed to in Minneapolis, do you think they should come to Rochester?
There has been talk that if the pilot program goes well, they may roll out speed cameras in other parts of the state. I wouldn't be surprised if they come here.
