Rochester Man Facing Escape from Custody Charge for Incident That Resulted in Brain Injury for St. Mary’s Nurse

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A Rochester man is facing an escape from custody charge for an incident that resulted in a serious brain injury for a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital.

A criminal complaint, filed in Olmsted County Court on Wednesday, says the incident occurred on the morning of September 16. 

Rochester Man Facing Escape from Custody Charge for Incident That Resulted in Brain Injury for St. Mary's Nurse

43-year-old Jascon Jacoby Hollins is charged with a felony escape from custody count. 

The criminal complaint says he was in the custody of the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office for felony offenses and was taken to the hospital while under arrest for medical care. A detention deputy was supervising him while he was at the hospital.

Hollins had asked to use the bathroom and the deputy began to put him in a two-point restraint, which the complaint describes as a handcuff connected to the wrist and an opposite ankle. 

Nurse Injured During Tackle of Fleeing Suspect

The court document says Hollins broke free while the deputy was putting him in the restraint. He grabbed a crucifix off the wall, ran out the door then down the hall. 

The deputy gave chase, caught up to Hollins and tackled him. During the tackle, the two collided with a nurse in the hall, who fell and hit his head, the court document says. 

The nurse suffered a brain bleed and required surgery to alleviate it, according to the complaint. Hollins was taken into custody. 

Deputy Spat On

Hollins is also facing a felony fourth-degree assault charge. The criminal complaint in that case says he spat on an Olmsted County Sheriff’s Deputy who was supervising him at St. Mary’s Hospital multiple times. 

The alleged spitting occurred two days before the alleged attempt to escape from custody, according to court records. 

Hollins made his first court appearance in both cases on Wednesday morning. His bail was set at $50,000 without conditions and he’s due back in court next month.
