Tanker Truck Driver Released Without Charges – For Now
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - The truck driver who was behind the wheel of a tanker truck that drove into a crowd of demonstrators on a Twin Cities freeway Sunday afternoon has been released from custody.
The Hennepin County Attorney's Office issued a statement this afternoon indicating the 35-year-old Otsego man is not facing any charges at this time. Officials stress the incident remains under investigation and charges are still possible.
State Public Safety Commissioner earlier stated that investigators did not believe the truck driver intended to harm any of the protesters and that it appeared he "panicked" when he came upon the thousands of people gathered on the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis. It was also noted that he was already on the freeway before it was closed to traffic because of the protest.
After initially roaring through the middle of the crowd, the truck driver slammed on the brakes and officials believe no one was hit by the tanker.
