I love peanut butter. Literally any and all peanut butter. In candy, on fruit, in dessert, basically, if it has peanut butter, I’m in. Which is why this news I stumbled upon felt borderline personal.

Apparently, not all peanut butter is created equal. I mean, I knew there were differences like crunchy vs. creamy and organic vs. the stuff you grew up on - but a whole list dedicated to the brands we should avoid?

The list was put out by 24/7 Wall St. - and let me tell you, it’s making me second-guess a few of my grocery store faves. They didn’t just throw shade without reason either - they focused on things like flavor, texture, and nutritional value.

What’s more, they uncovered some unsettling truths about the additives hiding in popular peanut butter brands and the potential health risks that come with them. Worst yet, these brands are sold all over Minnesota.

Which Peanut Butter Brands Should Minnesota Shoppers Avoid?

While it's often marketed as a healthy addition to your after noon snack or morning smoothie, there are some hidden ingredients that should be avoided in many of the popular brands.

I love the idea of Smucker’s Goober Grape. I begged for it as a child. And the fact that goober is another name for peanuts in the Southern United States makes me love the name. But the idea of eating it? The high fructose corn syrup alone is enough to make me pass. Potassium sorbate, a mold and yeast suppressant that is considered generally safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is heavily regulated in Europe. This is due to its status as a genotoxin. A genotoxin is an agent that causes DNA or chromosomal damage. Be a savvy consumer. Read labels. And remember that in the world of peanut butter, less is more. - 24/7 WallSt

Their advice? Stick to peanut butter with the shortest ingredient list - ideally, just peanuts. It’s the best way to dodge unnecessary additives and the health risks that come with them.
