A large floating water fountain that was installed in a pond at Florence Park was discovered missing Thursday. The thieves apparently took it late Wednesday night or early Thursday.

Stewartville City Administrator Bill Schimmel suspects the thieves waited for the electrical timer connected to the fountain to activate because the wires were cut. Otherwise, they may have been electrocuted.

Schimmel also suspects two or more thieves were involved because the fountain is “pretty heavy “  and a vehicle would have been needed to haul it away.

It is also expensive. Schimmel puts the loss at $14,000 - $16,000.

He has no idea why it was stolen because the scrap value is pretty low.

Anyone with knowledge of its whereabouts is asked to contact the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office.
