St Paul  (KROC AM News) - Minnesota will soon have two women US Senators.

Gov. Mark Dayton Wednesday announced he is appointing Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to take Sen. Al Franken’s seat when he steps down. And, Smith said at the news conference that she will run in next November’s special election to complete the final two years of the term.

Under the state constitution, the president of the state Senate will assume the Lt. Governor’s office when Smith steps down. That person is Michelle Fischbach - a Republican, who would work under the Democrat Dayton. It’s not known if that will actually happen as Republican and Democratic leaders of the legislature have reportedly been in talks about the situation.

Also to be determined is who will take Smith’s leadership position with the DMC Corporation Board.
