Recently updated data from the FBI highlights the crime trends for the US. With the release of that data, Minnesota's 2020 report on crime was included by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The good news for many, or maybe not so good news in some cases, is that the number of arrests in Minnesota was down significantly in 2020, but it appears that the number of arrests for violent crimes when compared to last year, those arrest numbers went up, roughly 16 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.

The report, which you can see here, broke crime into various categories which included the number of arrests that happened by law enforcement agencies by parts. Part 1 arrests are those arrested for more violent crimes like murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, and human trafficking. Part 2 arrests were generally lesser violent-type crimes like forgery, fraud, and vandalism.

On the Part I type arrests the report from the Department of Public Safety in Minnesota stated that:

"Violent crime in Minnesota accounted for 15.9 percent of all offenses reported in 2020. There were 14,589 total violent crimes (murders, rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults and human trafficking offenses) for the year. Compared with the 12,509 total violent crimes reported for 2019, the 2020 figure represents an increase of 16.6 percent in violent crime for the state."

To determine the 'most dangerous' cities in Minnesota I took the total amount of adult Part I arrests and divided that number the grand total total number of adult arrests in the reporting communities, giving a percentage of the Part I arrests to total arrests. Part I arrests would be the more 'violent' type of crimes, as indicated above.

I also threw out some communities in the original top-10 list that came from the data. Those communities were thrown out as the grand total arrests were so small (less than 10), any type of Part I arrest can skew the percentage. The communities that were tossed had a Part I arrest percent of 50% were, Minneota, Cleveland, and Chatfield.
