Trump Administration Targets Minnesota State High School League
Washington, DC (KROC-AM News) - The Trump Administration has launched an investigation into the Minnesota State High School League and a similar state athletic organization in California.
The US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights today announced the investigation into the Minnesota organization's "publicly announced plans to violate federal antidiscrimination laws related to girls' and women's sports." The investigation is connected to a recent news release from the State High School League that indicated its' policies concerning transgender athletes were in line with the Minnesota Human Rights Act and the State Constitution, which bars discrimination based upon sexual orientation and gender identification.

President Trump recently signed an executive order that requires educational programs to take "all appropriate action to affirmatively protect all-female athletic opportunities at all-female locker rooms and thereby provide the equal opportunity guaranteed by Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972."
The news release from the federal government announcing the investigation included the following quote from Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor:
"OCR’s Chicago and San Francisco regional offices will conduct directed investigations into both organizations to ensure that female athletes in these states are treated with the dignity, respect, and equality that the Trump Administration demands. I would remind these organizations that history does not look kindly on entities and states that actively opposed the enforcement of federal civil rights laws that protect women and girls from discrimination and harassment.”

Prior to the announcement of the investigation by the US Department of Education, the Minnesota State School League issued a news release indicating that it was seeking clarity concerning President Trump's executive order and interactions with it and Minnesota law. The State High School League says the executive order requires a 60 day window for athletic associations to convene and take action implementing the order, and that it is considering requesting a formal opinion on the issue from Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.
