Twins Win On Error In 11th

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli made a throwing error in the 11th inning that allowed Josh Willingham to score from second base, giving the Minnesota Twins a 2-1 victory over New York on Saturday.

With the bases loaded, Trevor Plouffe hit a dribbler to reliever Matt Thornton (1-1). The left-hander flipped it to Cervelli for the forceout at home.

Cervelli then tried for the double play but his throw sailed way over the head of first baseman Mark Teixeira and Willingham raced home with the winning run.

The win snapped a seven-game home losing streak for the Twins against the Yankees and was just Minnesota's fourth win against New York in 17 games at Target Field.

Brian Duensing (2-2) pitched around a Carlos Beltran single in the 11th.

UNDATED (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have tacked another game onto their lead in the National League Central.

Matt Garza fired a two-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Brewers blanked the Reds 1-0 in Cincinnati. Garza retired his first 12 batters and became the first opposing pitcher in three years to blank the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Aramis Ramirez hit an RBI single in the first inning, just enough offense for Milwaukee to move five games ahead of St. Louis.

The Cardinals led 5-1 in the sixth inning before absorbing a 6-5 loss to Miami. Casey McGehee and Jeff Baker hit back-to-back RBI singles with two out in the ninth off Trevor Rosenthal, ending the Cardinals' three-game winning streak. Christian Yelich  got the Marlins' comeback going with a three-run homer in the sixth.

Also in the majors:

— Gio Gonzalez pitched eight scoreless innings and Washington set a season-high for runs and hits in a 13-0 laugher against the Chicago Cubs. Ryan Zimmerman tied a career high with four hits and drove in three runs, while Jayson Werth and Anthony Rendon each provided two RBIs and three of the Nationals' 19 hits.

— Atlanta still leads the NL East by 1 1/2 games over the Nationals after Andrelton Simmons drove in four runs in the Braves' season-high ninth straight win, 10-4 against Arizona. Justin Upton added a two-run homer and three RBIs to help the Braves move a season-high 11 games over .500.

— Pittsburgh rode Andrew McCutchen's first-inning, two-run homer to a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia. Edinson Volquez allowed one run in seven innings and delivered an RBI grounder that put the Pirates ahead 3-0 in the second.

— Drew Stubbs hit a two-run homer, Corey Dickerson added a solo shot and Wilin Rosario poked a pair of RBI singles as Colorado held off the Dodgers 8-7 to end a five-game losing streak. Jorge De La Rosa allowed two runs and three hits in six innings before the Rockies' bullpen gave back most of a six-run lead.

— The Giants rallied for a 5-3 victory in San Diego, putting San Francisco within a half-game of the NL West-leading Dodgers. Michael Morse forced extra innings with a solo shot in the ninth before Brandon Belt's two-run homer ended the Giants' three-game slide.

— Seattle picked up its fifth victory in six games by beating the White Sox 3-2 on Brad Miller's RBI double in the 14th inning. Logan Morrison and Michael Saunders had three hits apiece, while the Mariners held the White Sox to just four hits.

— Chris Archer scattered six hits and came within two outs of a complete game as Tampa Bay topped Detroit 7-2, the Rays' seventh victory in eight games. The Rays scored three times in the fifth and four more in the sixth, with Kevin Kiermaier hitting triples in both innings.

— Pinch-hitter Jonathan Herrera singled home Jonny Gomes to give the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 triumph against Baltimore in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The Red Sox ended a three-game skid and stopped the Orioles' four-game winning streak.— The Orioles earned a split of the twinbill as Nelson Cruz went 5-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBIs in a 7-4 win over the Bosox. Nick Hundley hit a two-run blast for the Birds.

— Michael Bourn hit a solo homer and Nick Swisher added a two-run single as Cleveland whipped Kansas City 7-3. T.J. House gave up three runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings for his first major league win.

— Texas halted a six-game losing streak as Robinson Chirinos hit a three-run homer to put the Rangers ahead 4-0 in the first inning of a 5-3 win over the New York Mets. Adrian Beltre also homered and Colby Lewis allowed two earned runs in six innings for the victory.

— Josh Donaldson added to his personal highlight reel and Scott Kazmir added to his all-star credentials. Donaldson homered and the third baseman made another spectacular defensive play in foul ground, Kazmir allowed three hits over seven innings and the Oakland Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 on Saturday night.

— David Freese and Albert Pujols hit two-run homers before C.J.Kron belted a three-run shot to cap the Angels' eight-run seventh in an 11-5 comeback against Houston. Astros starter Scott Feldman worked six innings and left with a 5-2 lead before the Los Angeles rallied for its 12th victory in 15 games to stay within 3 1/2 games of the AL West-leading A's.

A's get Samardzija and Hammel from Cubs

UNDATED (AP) — The Oakland Athletics just bolstered their rotation by acquiring two of the Chicago Cubs' top starters.

The A's have picked up right-handers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from Chicago for minor leaguers Addison Russell, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily and a player to be named. Samardzija and Hammel join Scott Kazmir, Sonny Gray and Tommy Milone in one of the majors' best rotations.

Samardzija has a 2.83 ERA in 17 starts this year, while Hammel is 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA.

An injury sidelined Russell earlier this season, but the shortstop is batting .333 with three doubles, one homer, eight RBIs and three steals in 13 games for Double-A Midland. The 19-year-old McKinney was the A's first-round pick last year.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels have picked up bullpen help by getting lefty Joe Thatcher from Arizona. The Halos also picked up outfielder Tony Campana in a deal that sends outfielder Zach Borenstein and minor league right-hander Joey Krehbiel to the Diamondbacks. The sidearm-throwing Thatcher was 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 37 games for Arizona this season.
