Motorists traveling from Harmony to Hokah on Highway 44 and from Altura to Minnesota City on Highway 248 will begin to see the speed limits raised this week.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Highway 44 from Harmony to Hokah and Highway 249 from Altura to Minnesota City will see the speed limit raised from 55 mph to 60 mph.

The new speed limits will officially take place once the new signs are in place. The MnDOT crews started posting the signs this week. The work on Highway 44 includes Fillmore and Houston County, while the work on Highway 248 includes Winona County.

The speed limit changes started back in 2014 to several two-lane highways across the area after the Minnesota Legislature directed MnDOT to evaluate its two-lane 55 mph highways. The statewide study ends this year.

Motorists should be prepared to see workers on area roads throughout the week and be prepared to slow down and make sure the crews can work safely.
