Updated Rainfall Totals From Wednesday’s Torrential Rain

Strong thunderstorms and heavy rain hit Northern Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin on Tuesday, with some places seeing more than 7 inches of rain in a matter of hours.

Torrential rainfall through the afternoon and evening hours across the region led to creeks, rivers, and streams swelling and roads flooding.

As of Wednesday morning, a number of major roadways in the Northland remain impacted due to either water on the roadway or washouts, including portions of Highway 13 that are closed near Cornucopia in Northern Wisconsin and a number of roads in Northern Minnesota such as portions of Highway 1, Highway 61, Highway 169, Highway 65, and Highway 73.

Radar estimates (in the image above) from the National Weather Service show a few bands of particularly heavy rain that fell through Tuesday, with the areas in pink and red having estimates.

One band of heavy rain was just inland from Gooseberry Falls State Park and Silver Bay, extending along the shoreline toward Isabella. The other centered on Lake Vermilion, extending from Angora to just Northwest of Ely.

This week's heavy rain is bringing back memories for some, as it is almost exactly 12 years after the June 2012 flooding that hit the region on June 19, 2012, leaving flood damage behind in Duluth, at Jay Cooke State Park, in places like Moose Lake, and across Northern Wisconsin.
