St. James, MN (KROC-AM News) - A man was shot and killed by a law officer in south-central Minnesota on Wednesday.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has issued a statement on the deadly incident at a convenience store in St. James that indicates it began Wednesday morning earlier in the day when a Sheriff’s Deputy began chasing a man spotted driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen in New Ulm but broke off the pursuit for safety reasons.

About a half hour later, the stolen vehicle was located in St. James. The BCA says a police officer was following it when the driver apparently lost control and crashed the vehicle into a snowbank. The man then ran into a nearby convenience store and attempted to hide in an office.

The statement from the BCA indicates officers from the St. James Police Department, the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Department and the State Patrol were present when multiple shocks from Tasers were used in an apparent effort to subdue the man before one of the officers shot the man, who later died from his wounds at the Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital in St. James. One of the officers involved in the deadly confrontation was also brought to the hospital to be treated for a minor injury.

The report notes that a knife was recovered at the scene. At this point, the BCA is still withholding the name of the man who died and other details about the incident.
