Vogelsong Shuts Down Twins In 2-1 Giants Win

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ryan Vogelsong struck out seven in 6 2-3 scoreless innings and Pablo Sandoval homered for the fourth time in six games to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night.

Vogelsong (3-2) allowed three hits and one walks to give him a 1.35 ERA in his past six starts and help the Giants win their sixth straight interleague game dating to last season.

Josmil Pinto broke up the shutout bid with a leadoff homer in the ninth inning against Sergio Romo, but that was all the Twins could manage. Romo retired the next three batters to get his 16th save in 18 chances.

Samuel Deduno (1-3) allowed two runs in 5 2-3 innings after being moved up a day in Minnesota's rotation but ended up on the short end because of the performances from Vogelsong and Sandoval.

Game three is this afternoon with Ricky Nolasco scheduled to start for the Twins.  First pitch at 3:05 pm.

Twins: Willingham, Arcia on the way
(twinsbaseball.com) -- Outfielders Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia are set to rejoin the Twins following the team's California road trip. Both players have been rehabbing their respective wrist injuries and figure to add a big boost of power to Minnesota's lineup once they return.

While Willingham is expected to assume everyday duties in left field, Arcia could also see regular at-bats in the outfield rotation. Through 45 games, the Twins ranked sixth in the American League with 4.53 runs per game, but ranked 11th in slugging (.376) and 13th in homers (35).

(AP) — The Boston Red Sox went from worst to first in the American League East last season before capturing the World Series. The Toronto Blue Jays are threatening to do the same thing after improving to 28-22, keeping them two games ahead of the New York Yankees.

Brett Lawrie smacked the Blue Jays' major league-leading 69th home run in a 5-2 triumph over Oakland. Jose Reyes and Anthony Gose each scored twice to support R.A. Dickey, who allowed two runs in 8 1/3 innings for his third victory in four starts.

The Blue Jays have won 10 of their last 12 and haven't been atop the division this late in a season since July 6, 2000.

The AL West-leading Athletics have dropped three in a row, matching their longest slump of the season.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox remain last in the AL East after blowing a 5-0 lead in their ninth straight loss. Cole Figueroa scored on pitcher Andrew Miller's throwing error in the bottom of the 15th to complete Tampa Bay's comeback in a 6-5 win over the Bosox. Brandon Guyer tied the game with a two-run double in the seventh after Logan Forsythe drove in a pair.

The Red Sox collected just three hits after A.J. Pierzynski's three-run blast gave them a 5-0 lead with one out in the top of the first.

— The Yankees erased a 3-0 deficit in the ninth before Jacoby Ellsbury belted a two-out homer in the 10th to give the Bombers a 4-3 win over the White Sox in Chicago. Ellsbury also scored on Alfonso Soriano's ground-rule double during the Yanks' three-run rally before pinch-hitter Brian McCann supplied the game-tying single.

— Corey Kluber struck out nine while allowing just five hits in seven innings of Cleveland's 9-0 pounding of the Orioles in Baltimore. Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer and walked three times for the Indians, who tagged former teammate Ubaldo Jimenez for five runs in four-plus innings.

— A throwing error by pitcher Mike Morin ignited a three-run 13th inning as Kansas City downed the Angels 7-4 in Anaheim. Eric Hosmer had four hits for the Royals, including an RBI single.

— Rougned Odor went 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBIs as Texas ripped the Tigers 12-2 in Detroit. Adrian Beltre and Donnie Murphy homered to back Nick Martinez, who allowed a run and eight hits in six innings for his first big league win.

— Rookie George Springer crushed a pair of two-run homers and had five RBIs in Houston's 9-4 romp over the Mariners in Seattle. Brett Oberholtzer gave up two earned runs in six innings for his first victory since an 0-6 start.

— San Francisco was a 2-1 winner against Minnesota as Ryan Vogelsong held the Twins to three hits while striking out seven over 6 2/3 innings. Pablo Sandoval provided the scoring with a solo homer and a sacrifice fly to help the Giants improve to a major league-leading 31-18.

— Juan Nicasio held the Braves to two hits in six shutout innings to lead Colorado's 3-1 victory in Atlanta. Michael Cuddyer and Troy Tulowitzki  hit solo homers to help Nicasio improve to 5-2.

— Chase Utley hit a two-run homer, Ben Revere went 4-for-4 and Jimmy Rollins had two RBIs in Philadelphia's 5-3 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Winning pitcher David Buchanan gave up two runs and five hits over five innings in his major league debut.

— Jacob Turner pitched shutout ball over 6 1/3 innings of Miami's 2-1 triumph against Milwaukee, allowing eight hits in his first win of the season. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit an RBI double and Jeff Baker added an RBI single to put the Marlins ahead 2-0.

— Jon Jay was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles as St. Louis downed the Reds 6-3 in St. Louis. Yadier Molina socked a solo homer and Jaime Garcia worked 5 2/3 innings to help the Cardinals pull within 1 ½ games of the first-place Brewers in the NL Central.

— Josh Harrison supplied the tiebreaking, RBI single in a two-run seventh that pushed the Pirates past Washington 3-2 in Pittsburgh. Neil Walker hit a solo homer for the Bucs, who've taken the first three games of the four-game set.

— Martin Prado hit a pair of RBI singles and Josh Collmenter worked six innings as Arizona nipped the Mets 3-2 in New York. Collmenter allowed David Wright's solo homer but just three other hits.

— Travis Wood pitched into the eighth inning and singled home the eventual deciding run as the Chicago Cubs downed the Padres 3-2 in San Diego. Luis Valbuena hit a solo homer to back Wood, who held the Padres to two runs and three hits over 7 1/3 innings.

Victorino back on DL

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have placed right fielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season. Both times it's been because of a strained right hamstring. He was sidelined from the start of the season until he was activated April 24.

Also in the majors:

— The St. Louis Cardinals placed left-handed reliever Kevin Siegrist on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained pitching forearm. Siegrist has made 23 appearances, tied for the team lead. He's 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 20 innings.

— The Orioles and Padres have pulled off a trade that sends catcher Nick Hundley to Baltimore for left-handed reliever Troy Patton. The 30-year-old Hundley hit .271 with a home run and three RBIs in 33 games with the Padres this season.
