Warning to Minnesota Pet Owners: Microchips Not Working After Company Disappears
Most Minnesota pets are microchipped in case they go missing. It's a super easy tool that provides piece of mind to pet owners in case something bad were to happen.
When your pet gets a microchip, the number on the chip is registered with a microchip company. On the company's website, you can register your pet's number to your information so that way if they were to go missing, a vet can scan the microchip and your information will pop up.
There are quite a few microchip companies out there but one of them just recently disappeared with no notice.
This is causing some big problems and is worrying pet parents.

Pet Microchip Company Disappears
The company that closed suddenly is called Save This Life, a company based in Texas. Yes, there are Minnesota pets that have microchips registered under this company.
WCCO reports that for sure Flying Cloud Animal Hospital in Eden Prairie has been using Save This Life for years, but I'm sure there are many other vets out there who have used the company too.

Why Did Microchip Company Save This Life Close?
No one is quite sure why Save This Life closed. However, the American Animal Hospital Association says that "on the Texas Secretary of State’s website, the company has a registration status of 'inactive.'” They also report that Save This Life "has lost its right to do business in Texas because its “'Franchise Tax Involuntarily Ended.'”
Now that the company is gone, what happens to the pets with those microchips?
What to Do if Your Pet's Microchip No Longer Works
If a pet that has a microchip through Save This Life were to get scanned, nothing would come up under the microchip number. So all of your information that you would have registered under the number is no longer there.
In order to fix this, first you need to know your pet's microchip number. If you don't know that, you can go to your vet and have them scan it and check. Also, if you're not sure if your pet's microchip is through Save This Life they can help with that too.
If the microchip is through Save This Life, there are many other microchip companies out there where you can re-register your pet and your information. Your vet can assist you with that as well.
