(St Paul) - There is still no official word on the cause of a recent 911 outage that affected Minnesota and several other states.

But at least one respected blogger is shining the light on two companies that oversee 911 calls in the affected states.

KrebsonSecurity.com says it has been told by multiple sources “the 911 issues stemmed from some kind of technical snafu involving Intrado and Lumen, two companies that together handle 911 calls for a broad swath of the United States.”

Lumen was formerly known as CenturyLink and is Minnesota's 911 service provider.

The blog notes the same two companies were fined last year for a multi-state 911 outage in 2018.

The most recent outage occurred Sept. 28th. Residents in southeast Minnesota were among those affected.

The Minnesota Dept of Public Safety later reported it contacted Lumen“and based on its preliminary review, 135 calls to 24 Minnesota public safety answering points failed to be routed during the 48-minute disruption.”

DPS also reported it believed ”the outage was longer and that a number of 911 calls that failed to be routed were not included in the list.”

DPS says it was told by Lumen “the problem originated on a partnering vendor’s platform when an internal networking component failed to correctly forward traffic.”
