Deputies learned the 13-year-old girl had removed her personal flotation device while swimming off a pontoon. They were told the girl went under water and did not resurface and her friends called law enforcement after being unable to find her.

Boaters in the area assisted deputies with the search until search-and-rescue and dive teams arrived. The dive team found the girl’s body in an estimated 23 feet of water just less than three hours after the emergency call.

Her body has been sent to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Authorities do not plan to release her name, but did say she is from the Fargo-Moorhead area and was in Beltrami County visiting friends.
