Officers Shoot Gunman During Standoff Outside of MN Target Store

Woodbury, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Minnesota BCA has been called to the scene of an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the parking lot of a shopping complex in the Twin Cities on Monday.

That’s according to a news release issued by the Woodbury Department of Public Safety.

The incident began around 10:30 Monday morning when Woodbury Police responded to the report of a vehicle displaying stolen license plates in a Target parking lot located off of Valley Creek Rd. in Woodbury.

Police initially found an empty vehicle then encountered the suspect as he returned to the parking space. The news release says the man began fighting with officers, who saw he was armed with a handgun.

Police disengaged after seeing the firearm and the man barricaded himself inside of the vehicle. A SWAT Team then responded to the retail complex to negotiate with the suspect.

Authorities also deployed less than lethal rounds to try and draw the man out of the vehicle. Officials say the man then got out of the vehicle, brandished the handgun and pointed it at law enforcement.

The responding officers then shot the armed man.

The suspect, described in the news release to be a man in his 50’s, was taken to a hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. His current condition is not available.

A Woodbury Police Officer and Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy who were reported to have been involved in the incident have been placed on standard administrative leave. Their identities have also not yet been released.

Woodbury officials say they have turned over body-worn and dash camera footage to the Minnesota BCA, which is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

The BCA plans to release more information upon completion of its initial investigation.
