Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Students from John Adams Middle School will be in downtown Rochester today for what has turned into an annual event. They will be picking up discarded cigarette butts.

They will not only be helping clean up the downtown but will be rewarded for their work. They will be paid a nickel for every butt they turn in, up to $1500. The reward money will come from Mayor Brede, the Rochester Downtown Alliance and the city Park Department and will be donated to the John Adams science lab.

The students - who will be wearing red T shirts - will work from 8:10 - 1:15.  This is the 4th year of the “ Butt Kickers “ event.

Last year, 23,000 butts were picked up.
