Lightning work overtime to tie series...Caps take 3-2 lead

UNDATED (AP)— The Tampa Bay Lightning fought back from a two-goal deficit in the final five and a-half minutes of regulation to beat Detroit 3-2 in overtime and even that first-round NHL playoff series at two games apiece. Tyler Johnson scored the game-winner 2:25 into OT.

Johnson led a stirring really in the final six minutes of regulation and scored Tampa Bay's first goal with 5:26 remaining. He then assisted on Ondrej Palat's tying goal 77 seconds later.

Game 5 is Saturday in Tampa.

In other first-round NHL playoffs:

__ Evgeni Kuznetsof scored a pair of goals in Washington's 5-1 victory over the New York Islanders to give the Capitals a 3-2 series lead heading into Game 6 on Long Island Saturday.

— Nashville beat Chicago 5-2 to cut the Blackhawks lead in that series to 3-2. Rookie Filip Forsberg had the hat trick for the Predators, who travel to Chicago for Game 6 Saturday.

— Daniel Sedin scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and the Vancouver Canucks avoided elimination with a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames. The Canucks still trail the series 3-2 and Game 6 of that Western Conference quarterfinal series is Saturday in Calgary.

NBA PLAYOFFS

Warriors mount 20-point fourth quarter comeback to shock Pelicans...Cavaliers and Bulls on verge of sweeps

UNDATED (AP) __ The Golden State Warriors showed last night why they were the winningest team in the NBA this season. The Warriors roared from 20 points down in the fourth quarter to stun the New Orleans Pelicans 123-119 in overtime. That gives Golden State a commanding 3-0 series lead in that first round Western Conference series.

Steph Curry keyed the comeback. He forced OT by hitting a desperation 3-pointer from the corner. Curry finished with 40 points and dished out nine assists.

Curry hit seven 3s in all, including one to start overtime that gave the Warriors the lead for good.

Klay Thompson had 28 points for the Warriors, who trailed 89-69 after three quarters. But Golden State outscored New Orleans 39-19 over the next 12 minutes to force overtime, which the Warriors dominated.

Game 4 is Saturday night in New Orleans.

In other NBA first-round playoffs:

— The Cleveland Cavaliers are one victory away from a sweep in their first playoff series in five years after posting a 103-95 victory over the Boston Celtics. LeBron James led the scoring parade with 31. Kevin Love had 23 points and J.R. Smith added 15 for the Cavaliers. Cleveland goes for the sweep on Sunday

— Derrick Rose scored 34 points, Jimmy Butler added 24 and Chicago beat Milwaukee 113-106 in double overtime to take a 3-0 lead in that Eastern Conference playoff series. The Bulls will go for the sweep on Saturday in Milwaukee.

NBA-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Spurs' forward wins award

NEW YORK (AP) — Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs has been named the winner of the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year Award. He's only the sixth forward to lead the NBA in steals since the league starting keeping track of the statistic 42 years ago. Leonard is the first Spurs player to win the award since David Robinson in 1991.

Golden State's Draymond Green was second in the media voting.

MLB-EJECTIONS

Five ejected in White Sox-Royals game

CHICAGO (AP) — Benches cleared at the end of the seventh inning of the Kansas City Royals' 3-2, 13-inning win over the Chicago White Sox.

Kansas City starter Yordano Ventura snagged a grounder from Chicago outfielder Adam Eaton and the pair appeared to exchange words before Ventura threw to first to end the inning. After the play, players from both dugouts and bullpens ran onto the field. Several punches were thrown.

There were five ejections — Kansas City's Ventura, Lorenzo Cain and Edinson Volquez along with Chris Sale and Jeff Samardzija from Chicago.

Eric Hosmer hit the go-ahead double in the 13th for the go-ahead run for the Royals.

Mets, Colon keep winning...Wacha bests Scherzer

NEW YORK (AP) — Daniel Murphy drove in four runs to lead the Mets to a 6-3 win over Atlanta. The victory was the 11th in a row, matching a franchise record.

The streaking Mets finished 10-0 on their first homestand of the season after sweeping a trio of NL East rivals.

This is the fifth time the Mets have won 11 games in a row, and the first since 1990. Next stop, the Subway Series beginning Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

The Mets got another strong effort from 41-year old Bartolo Colon who gave up three runs over six innings. He improved to 4-0 for the first time in his career.

Elsewhere:

__ Michael Wacha got the best of Max Scherzer in a pitcher's duel as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Washington 4-1 for their fourth straight series win. The Cardinals have won seven of eight. Matt Adams singled in the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning. Wacha improved to 3-0 while Scherzer, the Nats' highly prized free agent signee in the offseason, fell to 1-2. The right-hander hurt his wrist in the fifth inning while at the plate, but dismissed the injury as a minor inconvenience.

— Justin Maxwell singled home the winning run with one out in the 10th inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 for a three-game sweep. The defending World Series champions have won four straight after losing eight of nine.

— Jean Segura drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to help Milwaukee top Cincinnati 5-4 and snap an eight-game losing streak. The Brewers 3-13 record is the worst in the majors.

— Gregory Polanco got three hits, including a go-ahead single in the seventh inning to lift the Pirates to a 5-4 win over the Cubs. Pittsburgh rallied from a three-run deficit to manage a split of the four-game series.

— David Phelps tossed three-hit ball over seven innings for the Marlins and Martin Prado drove in four runs. There were just over 17-thousand on hand to watch the two worst teams in the NL East in chilly temperatures. The crowd was the smallest in the 11-year history of Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park.

— Corey Dickerson hit a go-ahead home run leading off the fifth inning to help Colorado top the Padres 2-1. It was his third solo home run in two days. Jordan Lyles allowed a run on six hits in 6 2-3 innings against one of the top-hitting line-ups in the majors.

— Kole Calhoun's two-run homer was the Los Angeles Angels' only hit in a 2-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Nick Tropeano pitched five-hit ball into the seventh inning in his Angels debut and combined with three relievers on the shutout.

— Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer, Drew Hutchison pitched eight strong innings and the Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep of Baltimore, 7-6.

— Rene Rivera had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1.

— Brian McCann's drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to lift the New York Yankees past Detroit 2-1.

MLB-INJURIES

Tigers lose Nathan for the year...Jays put Navarro on DL

DETROIT (AP) — Tigers closer Joe Nathan will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his pitching elbow. Nathan suffered the injury while pitching on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old is a six-time All-Star, but is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career as he had a 4.84 earned run average in 2014 and blew seven saves.

— The Blue Jays have placed catcher Dioner Navarro on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and recalled catcher Josh Thole from Triple-A Buffalo. The switch-hitting Navarro is batting .276 with four RBIs in eight games.

Disgraced former star to attend All-Star Game

NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred says Pete Rose will be allowed to participate in activities surrounding this summer's All-Star Game in his hometown of Cincinnati.

This isn't the first time the disgraced former star has been allowed to attend a top Major League event. MLB permitted Rose to take part in the All-Century team announcement at Atlanta's Turner Field during the 1999 World Series and a Reds ceremony in 2013 honoring their 1975 and '76 championship teams.

Rose is baseball's career hits leader and a former Reds star player and manager. He agreed to a lifetime ban from the sport in 1989 after a Major League Baseball investigation concluded he bet on his team to win while he was managing the club.

New commissioner hoping for Spring training games in Cuba in '16

NEW YORK (AP) — Rob Manfred believes Major League Baseball can engage in some fastball diplomacy by holding some Spring training games is Cuba next year.

Cuban players in the major leagues have increased in recent years, many of them defectors. There were 74 players under major and minor league contracts on opening day, up from 29 in 2008.

NFL-CONCUSSIONS SETTLEMENT

Duerson family lawsuit could snag settlement

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The family of late Pro Bowl safety Dave Duerson will appeal this week's NFL concussion settlement amid concerns it doesn't include future awards for the brain decay diagnosed after his 2011 suicide.

An appeal could hold up the settlement approved Wednesday by a federal judge in Philadelphia. The potential $1 billion deal is designed to monitor more than 20,000 NFL retirees over 65 years and compensate those with dementia, Alzheimer's disease and other serious neurological conditions.

Boo and de Jonge on top

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Boo Weekley and Brendon de Jonge both shot an 8-under 64s to take the first round lead at the Zurich Classic. That gives them a one shot lead over David Hearn and Sean O'Hair.

LPGA-SWINGING SKIRTS

Ko takes first round lead

DALY CITY, Calif. (AP) — Lydia Ko settled for a tap-in birdie on the par-5 14th after her eagle chip deflected off the pin and the defending champion shot a 5-under 67 to take the first-round lead in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic.

The top-ranked Ko holds a one-stroke lead over three others, including 54-year-old Juli Inkster. Stacy Lewis, last year's runner-up to Ko at Lake Merced (mur-SEHD') Golf Club, was two strokes back at 3 under.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Two decide to stay in school...Arizona's Johnson opts for NBA

UNDATED (AP) — Indiana guard James Blackmon Jr. has decided not to enter the NBA draft this season. The 6-foot-4 Indiana native finished second on team in scoring last season with 15.7 points and was one of the Big Ten's highest scoring freshmen.

Indiana is still waiting on the decision of junior guard Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell, the Hoosiers' top scorer last season at 16.3 points. He is scheduled to make that announcement Saturday in his hometown of Indianapolis.

In other college basketball personnel news:

— California guard Tyrone Wallace will return for his senior season instead of entering the NBA draft. Wallace was a first-team All-Pac-12 pick this season when he averaged 17.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He was the only player to rank in the top five in the conference in all three categories.

— Arizona forward Stanley Johnson is leaving Arizona after one season to declare for the NBA draft. The athletic 6-foot-7 Johnson was one of the nation's top incoming freshmen and lived up to the billing, leading the Wildcats with 13.8 points per game and averaging 6.5 rebounds.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-IOWA STATE

Coach Hoiberg out of hospital following heart surgery DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg has been released from the hospital, less than a week after open-heart surgery.

Hoiberg tweeted a picture of himself being wheeled out of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on Thursday with the caption "it's been real...thanks for everything!"

WNBA-ARRESTS

Griner, finance arrested after fight

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner and her fiancee, fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson, were arrested on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct after an argument in the home they recently purchased together became physical.

The two 24-year-olds were each arrested Wednesday on counts of assault by recklessly causing physical injuries and disorderly conduct for fighting. They were booked into the Maricopa County Jail in downtown Phoenix and later released.
