Englishman Willett wearing green jacket after Spieth loses 5-shot lead

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Jordan Spieth suffered a monumental collapse on the back nine of the 80th Masters, handing the green jacket to Danny Willett of Sheffield, England. Willett shot a final-round 5-under 67 to finish five under par to win by three shots.

Spieth looked to be in the driver's seat after he took a five-shot lead into the back nine. But the defending champion bogeyed 10 and 11 and then took a quadruple 7 on the 12th hole. Spieth finished with a final-round 1-over 73 that included a 41 on that fateful back nine. Spieth finished tied for second with Lee Westwood.

Even more painful for Spieth was going to Butler Cabin and to the 18th green ceremony to present the green jacket to Willett.

"It was a really tough 30 minutes for me that hopefully I never experience again," Spieth said.

Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey and J.B. Holmes finished tied at 1-under. Only six golfers broke par at the 80th Masters.

Little-known Englishman wasn't planning to play Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP)_Who is Danny Willett? It's a question even hard-core golf fans are asking after his shocking victory at the Masters.

The 28-year-old Englishman wasn't even planning to play Augusta. His wife was due with their first child on the weekend of the Masters. Their son, Zachariah James, was born on March 30, clearing Willett to a most unlikely path to becoming a major champion -- and the $1.8 million first place check.

Willett won in his second appearance at the Masters. He's only the eighth player to win the green jacket in two or fewer starts at Augusta. He ended Europe's 17-year drought at Augusta National, and he became the first player from England to win the green jacket since Nick Faldo in 1996.

Willett is the second Englishman to win the Masters. The other is Faldo, who won three times.

Willett also is only the fourth European to win his first major title at the Masters.

Homer-happy Giants rally past Dodgers

UNDATED (AP) — Joe Panik hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the sixth inning and the San Francisco Giants homered three times to overcome an early five-run deficit and beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-6.

Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Angel Pagan all homered as the Giants rallied after falling behind 5-0 before they even came up to bat. San Francisco has 14 homers in the opening week of the season. The Giants have hit at least one homer in the first seven games for the first time since at least 1913.

Johnny Cueto is 2-0 despite allowing six runs on 10 hits in seven innings.

In other baseball:

— Colorado rookie Trevor Story capped his amazing first week in the majors by hitting his seventh home run in the Rockies' 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres. — The Chicago Cubs completed a 5-1 opening week by beating Arizona 7-3 behind a 12-hit attack. Jake Arrieta homered and pitched seven innings for his second victory.

— Coco Crisp hit a two-out homer in the 10th inning to help the Oakland Athletics overcome a dominant outing from Seattle ace Felix Hernandez and beat the Mariners 2-1 to finish a three-game sweep. Hernandez struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings but was not involved in the decision.

— The Blue Jays avoided being swept at home by the Red Sox with a 3-0 win. Marco Estrada pitched seven shutout innings and Josh Donaldson hit a solo home run in the win. Activated off the 15-day disabled list before the game after missing the start of the season with a sore lower back, Estrada gave up five hits, walked two and struck out eight.

— Matt Harvey of the Mets is now 0-2 after losing to the Phillies 5-2. He allowed a two-run home run to Odubel Herrera and the Phillies won the last two games of the three-game series after an 0-4 start. The Phillies already have more wins at Citi Field this season than last year, when they went 1-8.

— Jimmy Nelson struck out nine in six innings and the Brewers took advantage of early wildness by Houston ace Dallas Keuchel in a 3-2 win over the Astros. The American League Cy Young Award winner walked four in the first inning and gave up a two-run single to Aaron Hill. Keuchel, who is 1-1, left with two outs in the sixth with a career high-tying six walks.

— Brandon Moss and Matt Carpenter each hit three-run homers as St. Louis beat Atlanta 12-7. The loss leaves the Braves winless in five games this season. Notes from baseball

NEW YORK (AP) — One of the key men in the Mets rotation is having some health issues. Jacob deGrom, the 2014 NL Rookie of the Year, will miss his scheduled start Wednesday against Miami because of a sore muscle in his right side. The Mets said Sunday he will be replaced by Logan Verrett.

DeGrom won the Mets' home opener Friday against Philadelphia, allowing one run and five hits over six innings during a 7-2 victory. He came out as a precaution after 76 pitches because of the discomfort.

— The Texas Rangers have placed right fielder Shin-Soo Choo on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf muscle and catcher Robinson Chirinos on the 60-day DL because of a broken right forearm. Choo's injury occurred Saturday while he was running on the wet outfield grass before batting practice, and he is expected to be out four to six weeks.

— The Twins have placed outfielder Danny Santana on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring injury. He was hurt in the 7-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

OBIT-SMITH

Former NFL player shot and killed

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith was shot and killed late Saturday in what appeared to be a road rage incident in the Crescent City. An emailed statement from New Orleans city coroner Jeffrey C. Rouse said that Smith died "of multiple gunshot wounds" after a traffic accident. The former defensive end was 34 years old.

According to police, Smith was driving in a Mercedes Saturday in an upscale part of the city when his vehicle was hit from behind by an orange Hummer2. That caused Smith's vehicle to hit a car in front of him. At some point Smith and Cardell Hayes, the driver of the Hummer, exchanged words and then, according to police, Hayes pulled out a gun and shot Smith multiple times. He died on the scene.

Police said they recovered the weapon and took Hayes into custody.
