Spurs, Cavs, Heat, Clippers win openers

UNDATED (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs have followed their team-record, 67-win regular season with a lopsided victory in Game 1 of the NBA's Western Conference quarterfinals.

Kawhi Leonard scored 20 points and had four steals in less than 29 minutes as the Spurs ripped Memphis 106-74. LaMarcus Aldridge added 17 points for San Antonio, which owned an 11-point lead before outscoring the Grizzlies 33-14 in the third quarter.

Tony Parker contributed 15 points and six assists to the rout.

Game 2 is Tuesday in San Antonio.

In Cleveland, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love and LeBron James combined for 81 points, but the Cavaliers struggled in a 106-101 victory over Detroit. Irving finished with a game-high 31 points and hit a pair of crucial free throws that put Cleveland ahead by eight late in the game. Love delivered 28 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to give the Cavaliers a four-point advantage. James chipped in 22 points and 11 assists for the top-seeded Cavs.

The Pistons hit 10 of their 15 3-pointers while building a 58-53 halftime lead, and they were tied at 88 following Reggie Jackson's 3-pointer with 6:29 remaining. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 21 and Marcus Morris added 20 in the Pistons' first playoff game in seven years.

Game 2 is Wednesday in Cleveland.

Miami opened is postseason schedule with a blowout win as Luol Deng scored 31 points on 11 of 13 shooting to lead the Heat's 123-91 pounding of Charlotte. Hassan Whiteside added 21 points and 11 rebounds in his postseason debut, while Dwyane Wade added 16 points in 25 minutes.

The Heat never trailed and set a team record for points in a playoff game.

Nic Batum scored 24 points for the Hornets, who emptied the bench with Miami leading by 31 late in the game.

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Miami.

The third blowout of the day occurred in Los Angeles as three Clippers had double-doubles in a 115-85 rout of Portland. Chris Paul finished with 28 points and 11 assists, while Blake Griffin provided 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Clippers are 6-0 since Griffin returned from a 45-game absence.

DeAndre Jordan finished with 18 points and 12 boards for the Clippers, who are back on their home court for Game 2 on Wednesday.

NBA-WARRIORS-CURRY

Curry questionable for Game 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Stephen Curry's ankle injury leaves the Golden State Warriors guard questionable for Game 2 of the Western Conference quarterfinals against Houston. Curry tweaked the ankle just before halftime of Saturday's 104-78 rout of the Rockets. He missed most of the second half and still finished with 24 points.

Shaun Livingston will start Monday if Curry can't play.

NBA-CELTICS-BRADLEY

Celtics lose Bradley

ATLANTA (AP) — Boston Celtics guard Avery Bradley is likely out for the rest of the opening-round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks.

Bradley went down with a severely strained right hamstring in Boston's Game 1 loss.

Coach Brad Stevens says Bradley is definitely out for Game 2 on Tuesday.

NBA-NETS-ATKINSON

Nets hire Hawks' Atkinson to coach

NEW YORK (AP) — The Brooklyn Nets have hired Hawks assistant Kenny Atkinson as their new coach.

The Hawks went to the playoffs in each of Atkinson's four seasons as their assistant. He was a New York Knicks assistant before coming to Atlanta.

Atkinson will remain with the Hawks through their playoff run.

NHL PLAYOFFS-SCHEDULE

Blues rally to beat Blackhawks

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Blues have taken a 2-1 lead in their first-round series against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Brian Elliott turned back 44 shots and the Blues scored twice in the third period to beat the Blackhawks 3-2 in Chicago. Jaden Schwartz snapped a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal at 13:32 of the third period while NHL scoring champ Patrick Kane served a double-minor for high sticking. Patrik Berglund tied it early in the final period after Elliott made 23 saves in the middle stanza.

Brent Seabrook and Artem Anisimov scored for the Blackhawks, who dropped to 28-7 in home playoff games since the 2013 postseason.

Game 4 is Tuesday in Chicago.

The surprising Nashville Predators have a 2-0 series lead following another road win at Anaheim. Craig Smith scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the second period before Shea Weber added the eventual game-winner 9 ½ minutes later to highlight the Predators' 3-2 win over the Pacific Division champs. Pekka Rinne stopped 27 shots and held off the Ducks while the Predators scored three straight goals.

Roman Josi and Filip Forsberg each had two assists for the Predators, who host Game 3 on Tuesday.

The New York Islanders needed overtime to complete a nice comeback and take a 2-1 lead in their first-round matchup. Thomas Hickey blasted a shot past Roberto Luongo  12:31 into overtime to give the Isles a 4-3 triumph over Florida. The Panthers led 3-1 until Shane Prince and Frans Nielsen scored in the second period.

Florida thought it had taken a 3-0 lead early in the second period, but the play was ruled offsides following a lengthy replay review of a coach's challenge. Reilly Smith had a goal and an assist for the Panthers, giving him seven points already in the series.

Game 4 is Tuesday in Brooklyn.

Detroit has closed to within two games to one in its opening-round series. The Red Wings scored twice in the second period and allowed just 16 shots in a 2-0 victory over Tampa Bay. The game was scoreless until Andreas Athanasiou and Henrik Zetterberg scored about five minutes apart late in the middle period.

Petr Mrazek got the shutout after replacing Jimmy Howard, who surrendered seven goals in the first two games of the series.

Ben Bishop made 28 saves for the Lightning, who take on the Wings in Game 4 on Tuesday.

A-Rod steps up

UNDATED (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies finally cooled off Washington after being outscored by the Nationals 17-2 in the first two games of their three-game series.

The Nats owned a seven-game winning streak and a major league-best 9-1 record until the Phils scored twice in the 10th inning to beat Washington 3-2. Andres Blanco singled home the tying run and scored on a walk-off double by Freddy Galvis against former Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. The rally came a half-inning after Bryce Harper homered for the fourth straight game.

In other major league action:

— Alex Rodriguez broke out of an 0-for-19 slump with a home run in his first at-bat, a two-run blast to help the Yankees beat Seattle 4-3. Rodriguez entered the game hitting .100, prompting manager Joe Girardi to drop him from third to sixth in the line-up.

— Aaron Sanchez allowed a run and two hits in seven innings of Toronto's 5-3 win over Boston. Jose Bautista homered, doubled, drove in two runs and raised his on-base percentage to .481.

— Nolan Arenado homered twice and Tyler Chatwood threw seven innings to lead Colorado to a 2-0 win over the Cubs. Chatwood combined with two relievers on a three-hitter to help the Rockies win a series at Wrigley Field for the first time in five years.

— Eric Fryer had three hits in his first start of the season, including the go-ahead double with two outs in the eighth inning to lead St. Louis Cardinals past Cincinnati, 4-3. The backup catcher is 6-for-6 this season.

— Oakland pulled out a 3-2 win against Kansas City on Josh Reddick's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth. Billy Burns led off the eighth with a triple and scored the go-ahead run.

— Jose Altuve led off the first inning with a home run and had three RBIs as Houston topped Detroit 5-4. George Springer also hit a solo homer to help the Astros earn their first series win of the season.

— Andrew McCutchen homered for the second straight day to highlight a 17-hit attack as Pittsburgh crushed Milwaukee 9-3. Matt Joyce and Gregory Polanco each had three hits for the Pirates, who also got a two-run shot from Sean Rodriguez.

— Steven Matz struck out a career-high nine and held the Indians to three hits over seven innings to help the Mets to a 6-0 win over Cleveland. Michael Conforto and Lucas Duda drove in two-run apiece while the Mets scored six times in the first two innings off Indians starter Cory Kluber.

— Matt Moore struck out 10 and yielded two runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings to lead Tampa Bay over the White Sox 3-2. Brandon Guyer tied a career high with four hits and drove in a run for the Rays.

— The Braves made it three straight wins since an 0-9 start as rookie Mallex Smith drove in the game-winning run with a two-out single in the tenth inning giving Atlanta a 6-5 victory over Miami. Jace Peterson drove in three for the Braves.

— The Twins have also followed an 0-9 start with a three-game sweep as Oswaldo Arcia singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give Minnesota a 3-2 win over the Angels. Trevor Plouffe had three hits and an RBI, and Kyle Gibson gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings.

— Kenta Maeda  was solid in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 3-1 win over San Francisco, yielding just a run and four hits while striking out seven in seven innings. Joe Panik's third-inning homer gave the Giants a 1-0 lead, but the Dodgers went ahead of Joc Pederson's two-run blast in the fifth.

— Yasmany Tomas homered twice, collected three RBIs and scored three times to lead Arizona's 7-3 triumph at San Diego. Brandon Drury had a two-run homer, a triple and two runs scored to back Patrick Corbin, who allowed one earned run over 6 2/3 innings.

— The Orioles game with the Rangers in Texas was postponed due to heavy rains and strong storms in the forecast. The game will be made up June 20.

NASCAR-BRISTOL

Edwards dominates in Bristol win

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Carl Edwards completed a dominating effort when he took off on the final restart to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The pole-sitter led 276 of 500 laps on the half-mile track.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second, followed by Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and Trevor Bayne.

Defending series champ and points leader Kyle Busch's quest for a third straight Sprint Cup win came to an end when he wrecked on the 259th lap.

INDYCAR-GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH

Pagenaud holds on

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Simon Pagenaud held off a challenge from Scott Dixon to win the Grand Prix of Long Beach.

It's Pagenaud's fifth IndyCar victory.

GOLF-RBC HERITAGE

Grace earns title

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — South Africa's Brandon Grace had five birdies on the front side en route to a 5-under 66 to win the RBC Heritage tournament. It was Grace's first win on the PGA tour and his 11th worldwide. Grace finished 9-under par for a two-shot win over Luke Donald and Russell Knox.

It's Donald's sixth top-three finish since 2009 at Harbour Town.

CHAMPIONS TOUR-MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CLASSIC

Austin, Short playoff

DULUTH, Ga. (AP) — Woody Austin tied the Mitsubishi Electric Classic record with an 8-under 64 and beat Wes Short Jr. with a par on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff.

The 52-year-old Austin has two victories in the last three events on the Champions Tour.

Short could have avoided the playoff, but he missed a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to tie Austin at 11-under.

TENNIS-MONTE CARLO MASTERS

Nadal prevails

MONACO (AP) — Rafael Nadal beat Frenchman Gael Monfils 7-5, 5-7, 6-love to win the Monte Carlo Masters for the ninth time.

This was the Spaniard's first tournament win in Monte Carlo since winning the last of his eight straight titles there in 2012. It is also the record-equaling 28th Masters title for Nadal, bringing him alongside top-ranked Novak Djokovic.
