UNDATED (AP) __ Gerrit Cole snapped the longest winless drought of his career, Pedro Alvarez homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates nipped the Miami Marlins 2-1. Cole is 15-7.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli tripled and scored in the second inning for the Pirates, who took three out of four in the series. Alvarez made it 2-0 in the fourth on his 21st homer — the 18th of the solo variety.

Cole allowed one run and five hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking none. Cole hadn't gotten the win in any of his previous five starts, and the Pirates are 45-22 all-time when he takes the mound.

In other games:

— Daniel Murphy's two-run, opposite field double keyed a four-run uprising in the 13th inning as the New York Mets rallied from a 5-0 first-inning deficit to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-5. That's the Mets' seventh straight victory that maintains their six and a-half game lead over Washington in the NL East. The Mets have scored 73 runs in their last seven games. The Mets have beaten the Phillies 12 of 13 games.

__ Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth homered and the Washington Nationals doubled up San Diego 4-2. Rookie hurler Joe Ross and three relievers combined on a three-hitter. Zimmerman finished the three-game series with eight RBIs. After the game, Washington manager Matt Williams said that center fielder Denard Span's back issues have re-surfaced, and he'll go on the disabled list with a left hip inflammation and could be done for the season.

— Zack Greinke continued his overpowering pitching scattering four hits over seven innings in the Dodgers' 1-0 win over Cincinnati. Greinke lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.61 to improve to 14-3. He struck out nine and walked two to help the NL West-leading Dodgers complete a three-game sweep. The slumping Reds have dropped 12 of their last 13.

__ The NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals beat Arizona 5-3 to win their 82nd game, the most in the majors. Brandon Moss cracked a two-run homer to break a fifth inning tie. That maintains the Cards' four and a-half game lead over Pittsburgh.

__ Tampa Bay edged Minnesota 5-4 to end the Twins' six-game winning streak. The loss dropped the Twins a half-game behind Texas for the second AL wild-card spot. Rays relievers Brandon Gomes, Alex Colome and Brad Boxberger combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

— Matt Shoemacker pitched one-hit ball into the eighth inning to lead the Angels to a 2-0 win over Detroit. Albert Pujols broke up the scoreless game with an RBI single in the sixth inning. He later scored the other Angels run.

— Yovani Gallardo pitched 5 1/3 innings for his 100th career win as the Rangers topped Toronto 4-1. Right fielder Jose Bautista had a ball roll by him and to the wall in the seventh inning that allowed three runs to score. Mitch Moreland drove in the other Rangers run in the first inning. The loss snapped Toronto's five-game winning streak.

— Yordano Ventura struck out a career-high 11 in just six innings, Paulo Orlando homered and the Kansas City Royals hung on to beat the struggling Baltimore Orioles 5-3. Ventura allowed two hits and four walks to improve to 5-0 in his last seven starts. He improved to 9-7.

__ The Chicago White Sox doubled up Seattle 4-2. Adam Eaton had three hits and scored three runs.

MLB-CUBS TRADE

Cubs get reliever Rodney from Mariners

CHICAGO (AP) — The playoff-contending Chicago Cubs acquired struggling reliever Fernando Rodney from the Seattle Mariners for cash, reuniting the exuberant closer with manager Joe Maddon.

The 38-year-old Rodney had been designated for assignment by Seattle on Sunday.

Rodney was 5-5 and had gone 16 for 22 in save chances this season. The right-hander had a 5.68 ERA in 54 games.

Bonds loses in collusion case

NEW YORK (AP) — An arbitrator has ruled against Barry Bonds in a collusion case stemming from his final season in the majors. Major League Baseball was informed this week that arbitrator Frederic Horowitz had ruled in its favor.

Bonds had sought compensation after no teams would take him following his final season with San Francisco. Bonds hit .276 with a .480 on-base average and 28 home runs in 340 at-bats for the Giants in 2007.

The career home runs leader with 762, Bonds turned 43 during his last season. He later offered to play for the minimum major league salary but got no offers.

Browns, Redskins and Ravens make news

UNDATED (AP) — With backup Johnny Manziel quarterback Pat Devlin. Manziel has been shut down from throwing because of the soreness, which the team revealed has been a problem for him since high school. Manziel has not thrown a pass since Sunday and the team has announced he won't play in the final two exhibition games.

Devlin has been with Miami, Minnesota and Chicago since being signed by the Dolphins in 2011.

Elsewhere:

— Redskins coach Jay Gruden says outside linebacker Junior Galette will miss the entire season after tearing his left Achilles tendon. Galette is the fifth Redskins player lost to a season-ending injury in the preseason.

— Baltimore has signed safety Will Hill to a two-year contract. The 25-year-old is entering his first full season with Baltimore after starting the final eight games of 2014. He had 42 tackles, an interception and broke up four passes in 10 games.

PGA-THE BARCLAYS

Watson shares lead

EDISON, N.J. (AP) — Bubba Watson is tied with Spencer Levin. Tony Finau and Camilo Villegas  for the lead after the first round of The Barclays.

Watson reeled off seven birdies in his 5-under 65.

Jordan Spieth got off to a rough start in the first tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The Masters and U.S. Open winner posted a 74 for his worst round in three months.

LPGA-YOKOHAMA

Lang grabs lead

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Brittany Lang has the first round lead at the LPGA's Yokohama Tire Classic. She shot a 7-under-65 that featured nine birdies. That's good for a two-shot lead over Tiffany Joh, Sydnee Michaels and Ryann O'Toole.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NOTRE DAME

NCAA rules DE Williams ineligible, ending his career

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly says defensive end Ishaq Williams has been ruled ineligible for the season by the NCAA, ending his college playing career. Williams was dismissed from Notre Dame last fall after being investigated for possible academic dishonesty, and had his waiver appeal for another season rejected by the NCAA.

Senior cornerback KeiVarae Russell also was dismissed from school along with Williams last season but has been cleared to play. Kelly said the circumstances were different in their cases.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-N.C. STATE

Running back Thornton suspended for first 2 games

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State has suspended rushing leader Shadrach Thornton for two games for a violation of athletic department rules.

A team spokeswoman says the unspecified violation occurred during the spring semester. The senior running back will miss the Sept. 5 opener against Troy and the Sept. 12 home game against Eastern Kentucky.

Thornton ran for 907 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

Surgery for Berglund

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Blues forward Patrik Berglund will undergo surgery on his right shoulder. The 27-year old will be evaluated in four months. Berglund was hurt in training for the upcoming season. This is the same shoulder he dislocated during the 2013-14 season.

TRACK AND FIELD

Bolt wins again

BEIJING (AP) — Usain Bolt has completed a sweep of the sprint events at the world track and field championships in Beijing. As was the case last Sunday when he won the 100 meters, he finished first in front of American Justin Gatlin in the 200. His winning time was 19.55 seconds.

While taking his victory lap Bolt was hit from behind by a cameraman who was riding a two-wheeled scooter. The scooter collided with the gold medal winner after hitting a metal railing.

Seven years ago, Bolt started his amazing run of gold at the Beijing Olympics and has not lost a major 200 race since.

TENNIS-US OPEN

Draw takes place

NEW YORK (AP) — The draw has taken place for the U.S. Open, the final major of the year in tennis, and once again there is the chance of a Serena Williams-Maria Sharapova semifinal. They met in the semis at Wimbledon with Williams coming out on top. Williams by the way is looking to complete a single season Grand Slam sweep at the Open.

On the men's side, Roger Federer and Andy Murray could meet in one semifinal and Novak Djokovic and last year's runner-up Kei Nishikori in the other.

The Open starts play next Monday in New York.

INDYCAR

Tribute to Justin Wilson before Sunday's finale

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Justin Wilson's race car will be back on track for the IndyCar season finale. Andretti Autosport announced that series veteran Oriol Servia will drive Wilson's No. 25 Honda at Sonoma Raceway this weekend.

The 37-year-old Wilson died Monday, a day after a piece of debris from another car struck him in the head at Pocono Raceway.

Dawkins dies at 58

UNDATED (AP) —Darryl Dawkins, one of the most colorful players in the NBA in recent memory, has passed away at the age of 58. His backboard-shattering dunks earned him the nickname "Chocolate Thunder" and helped pave the way for breakaway rims.

The Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, coroner's office said Dawkins died Thursday morning at a hospital. Dawkins' family says he died of a heart attack.

Dawkins spent parts of 14 seasons in the NBA with Philadelphia, New Jersey, Utah and Detroit. He averaged 12 points and 6.1 rebounds in 726 career regular-season games.
