Blazers knock of Warriors...Lowry rallies Raptors

UNDATED (AP) — Draymond Green matched 3-pointers with Damian Lillard on Saturday, but the Golden State Warriors couldn't overcome a dominant second quarter by the Portland Trail Blazers.

Lillard scored 14 of his game-high 40 points while the Blazers were outscoring the Warriors 36-18 in the second period of a 120-108 win over Golden State. Lillard shot 8-for-13 from 3-point range and finished with 10 assists and five rebounds to help Portland get within two games to one in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Trail Blazers were 17-for-30 from beyond the arc, with Al-Farouq Aminu going 4-for-5 while scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 boards. C.J. McCollum added 22 points for the Blazers.

Green shot 8-for-12 from 3-point range and finished with 37 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Klay Thompson had 35 points for the Warriors, who led 28-22 after one period.

Game 4 is Monday at Portland.

In Miami, the Heat had Toronto on the ropes until Kyle Lowry rallied the Raptors to a two-games-to-one lead in the NBA's Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Raptors squandered a 13-point lead before Lowry scored five straight to break a late tie and send Toronto past the Heat 95-91 in Miami. The game was tied at 82 when Lowry drained a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws on the Raptors' next possession. He added a pullup jumper that put Toronto ahead 89-86 with 31.7 seconds left.

Lowry finished with 33 points on 11 of 19 shooting, while DeMar DeRozan added 19 points. Jonas Valanciunas delivered 16 points and 12 rebounds in just 22 minutes before leaving the game with a sprained ankle in the third quarter.

Miami finished the game without Hassan Whiteside due to a knee issue of still-unclear severity in the second quarter.

Dwyane Wade scored 29 of his game-high 38 points in the second half for the Heat, who host Game 4 on Monday.

Memphis dumps coach

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Dave Joerger has been let go after three seasons as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, about two weeks after the team was swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA's Western Conference quarterfinals. The Grizzlies finished 42-40 with a spot in the playoffs despite using an NBA-record 28 players this season.

Joerger led the team to the playoffs all three seasons and leaves with an overall record of 147-99.

Blues take control, Caps stay alive

UNDATED (AP) — The Washington Capitals have extended their postseason by at least one more game.

The reigning Presidents' Trophy winners have avoided elimination and forced a Game 6 in their Eastern Conference semifinal series by knocking off the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 in Washington. T.J. Oshie set up Alex Ovechkin's power-play goal in the first period and scored the game-winner with the man advantage four minutes into the second. Justin Williams made it 3-1 midway through the contest.

Braden Holtby turned back 30 shots and blanked the Penguins after Chris Kunitz tied the score midway 7:08 into the game. Matt Murray stopped just 16 shots for the Penguins, who host Game 6 on Tuesday.

The St. Louis Blues are one victory away from advancing to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2001.

Robby Fabbri and Paul Stastny each had a goal and an assist as the Blues downed the Stars 4-1 in Dallas to take a three-games-to-two lead in the second-round series. The game was tied 1-1 until Dmitrij Jaskin and Troy Brouwer scored seven minutes apart in the last half of the second period.

Blues netminder Brian Elliott turned back 27 shots and was perfect after Alex Goligoski beat him midway through the opening period.

Kari Lehtonen made 18 saves for the Stars, who head to St. Louis for Game 6 on Monday.

San Jose also owns a 3-2 series lead after Joe Pavelski scored his seventh and eighth goals of the postseason to lead the Sharks' 5-1 win against Nashville. Pavelski snapped a 1-1 tie late in the first period, less than two minutes after Mike Fisher tied the game for the Predators.

Partick Marleau, Logan Couture and Melker Karlsson also scored, and Joe Thornton had two assists to help the Sharks improve to 3-0 at home in the series.

Martin Jones stopped 24 shots for the Sharks, who go to Nashville for Game 6 on Monday.

NHL-HART TROPHY

Finalists for MVP announced

NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks, Jamie Benn of the Stars and Sidney Crosby of the Penguins are the finalists for the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP. The winner will be announced June 22 during the 2016 NHL Awards in Las Vegas.

Kane became the first U.S.-born player to lead the league in scoring. His 46 goals, 60 assists and 106 points are career highs.

Crosby rebounded from the worst start of his career to put up 76 points in his final 62 games and help get the Penguins into the playoffs. And Benn finished second to Kane in the scoring race with 89 points on 41 goals and 48 assists. He led the Stars to their first division title since 2006.

KENTUCKY DERBY

A perfect start for Nyquist

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The favorite was the winner in the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby.

Nyquist is the eighth unbeaten horse to win the Run for the Roses. Nyquist went off at 2-1 and finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Exaggerator, who has lost to the Doug O'Neill-trained horse four times.

Nyquist stormed into the lead on the turn for home and finished the 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.31. The horse named for Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist paid $6.60, $4.80 and $3.60 as the 2-1 favorite in the full field of 20 horses. Gun Runner was another 3 ¼ lengths back in third.

Nyquist delivered a second Derby win for jockey Mario Gutierrez, O'Neill and owner J. Paul Reddam. They were the team behind 2012 Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another.

The track was in good condition and the field ran under sunny skies after a heavy rainfall about an hour before the race. The wet weather didn't stop around 167,000 from attending the race, the second-largest crowd ever at Churchill Downs.

Cubs beat Nats again...Sale gets 7th

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Cubs are demonstrating that there's a large gap between the first- and second-best teams in the majors.

The Cubbies beat the Nats for the third straight day as Addison Russell drove in three runs and Kris Bryant hit a solo homer in an 8-5 triumph at Wrigley Field. The game was tied 5-5 until Russell poked a two-run double with two out in the seventh.

Ryan Kalish added a two-run single as the Cubs won their sixth in a row to improve to a major league-best 23-6.

Jake Arrieta will carry a 6-0 record into Sunday's game against the Nationals as the Cubs try to complete a four-game sweep. He hasn't lost since last July 25.

The season's first seven-game winner resides in Chicago. Chris Sale is 7-0 after yielding just three hits in seven innings of the Chicago White Sox's 7-2 win against Minnesota. Sale struck out nine and blanked the Twins after the first inning.

Todd Frazier belted a solo homer and had two RBIs as the White Sox improved to an American League-leading 21-10.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Bartolo Colon entered the day with a .089 career batting average before smacking his first major league homer, a two-run blast that gave the New York Mets a 4-0 lead in the second inning of a 6-3 victory at San Diego. Yoenis Cespedes, David Wright and Michael Conforto also went deep to back Colon, who gave up three runs over 6 2/3 innings.

— Matt Carpenter launched a two-run, game-winning homer off A.J. Schugel in the bottom of the ninth to give St. Louis a 6-4 verdict over Pittsburgh. Randal Grichuk had two hits and three RBIs, and Stephen Piscotty hit a solo shot in the Cardinals' fourth victory in six games.

— San Francisco beat Colorado 2-1 as Matt Duffy won it with an RBI double in the bottom of the 13th after Brandon Crawford singled home the tying run in the 10th. Rockies starter Jon Gray fired a one-hitter for seven scoreless innings, while Johnny Cueto scattered eight hits over 8 1/3 shutout frames.

— Shelby Miller allowed four hits over six innings and Arizona's bullpen tossed hitless ball in a 4-2 victory in Atlanta. Brandon Drury had three hits for the Diamondbacks, including an RBI double that snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth.

— The Dodgers beat Toronto 6-2 as Clayton Kershaw struck out 10 while giving up two runs and eight hits in seven innings. Joc Pederson and Justin Turner each hit solo homers for Los Angeles, which also got a two-run single from Adrian Gonzalez.

— Philadelphia overcame homers by Marcell Ozuna and Justin Bour by scoring three times in the eighth inning to beat the Marlins 4-3 in Miami. Odubel Herrera and Cesar Hernandez hit RBI singles before Herrera scored the go-ahead run on first baseman Chris Johnson's error.

— Aaron Hill homered three times and had seven RBIs as Milwaukee outscored the Reds 13-7 in 10 innings at Cincinnati. Hill ripped a tiebreaking grand slam before Jonathan Villar added a bases-loaded double to cap the Brewers' seven-run 10th.

— Robinson Cano belted his 10th and 11th home runs to lift Seattle past Houston 3-2 in 10 innings. Cano broke a 2-2 tie after Luis Valbuena extended the game with a solo blast in the bottom of the ninth.

— Didi Gregorius lined a tiebreaking, three-run double and Carlos Beltran added a two-run double as the New York Yankees battered David Price in an 8-2 rout of Boston. Austin Romine hit a pair of RBI doubles and Nathan Eovaldi scattered six hits in eight innings to help the Yanks beat the Red Sox for the second straight day.

— Ian Kennedy retired 14 straight at one point and pitched four-hit ball over seven innings of Kansas City's 7-0 shutout of Cleveland. Kendrys Morales hit a three-run homer and collected four RBIs as the Royals won for only the third time in 11 games while stopping the Indians' four-game winning streak.

— Adrian Beltre provided two of the Rangers' five home runs and had four RBIs in a 10-5 rout of Detroit. Rougned Odor and Nomar Mazara opened the game with homers off Mike Pelfrey, but Texas didn't go ahead to stay until Mitch Moreland's two-run blast capped a five-run sixth.

— Logan Forsythe lined a tiebreaking, two-run single in the ninth inning of Tampa Bay's 4-2 decision over the Angels. Steven Souza Jr. tied the game with a two-run homer and Erasmo Ramirez worked two innings of relief for his sixth win.

— Marcus Semien smacked a two-run homer and had three RBIs as Oakland doubled up Baltimore 8-4 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. Brett Lawrie had three hits and two ribbies to back Rich Hill, who limited the Orioles to a run and two hits in 5 2/3 innings.

— The Birds earned a split of the twinbill as Chris Davis socked a two-run homer and Ubaldo Jimenez allowed two runs in eight innings of a 5-2 victory over the Athletics. A's outfielder Josh Reddick was 4-for-4 with an RBI.

UNDATED (AP) — The Royals have placed Mike Moustakas on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left thumb. The third baseman is hitting .258 with seven homers and 13 RBIs in 25 games. The Royals have lost eight of 10 and dropped to .500 for the first time since April 5.

In other major league news:

— Texas has re-signed utilityman Drew Stubbs and transferred outfielder Josh Hamilton to the 60-day disabled list. Stubbs went to camp with the Rangers and later signed with the Braves, where he was 9-for-38 before he was designated for assignment on Monday and released a day later. Hamilton continues to rehab from left knee surgery.

— The Minnesota Twins have put shortstop Eduardo Escobar on the 15-day disabled list with a groin strain. The club has also claimed right-handed reliever Casey Fien off waivers by the Dodgers and sent left-hander Tommy Milone to the minors.

NASCAR-KANSAS

Kyle Busch ends Kansas drought

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Busch finally won a NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway after years of misfortunes.

Busch sprinted past Kevin Harvick after a late wreck collected several of the leaders. It was the third win of the Sprint Cup season for Busch, who now only needs to win at Charlotte and Pocono to knock off every track in the series.

Harvick finished second, followed by Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth and Ryan Blaney.

PGA-WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP

Fowler in the lead

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rickie Fowler is the man on top after carding a 4-under 68 in the third round of the PGA's Wells Fargo Championship. He will start play Sunday at 9-under, one shot in front of Roberto Castro.

LPGA-YOKOHAMA TIRE CLASSIC

Update in women's play

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn birdied eight of the final nine holes in the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic to claim the lead at 14-under. She had a 9-under-63 in the third round to take a three-stroke lead over Ryann O'Toole and Minjee Lee. Jutanugarn is seeking her first LPGA Tour victory.

LPGA-WORLD LADIES CHAMPIOJNSHIP

Lexi Thompson wins World Ladies in Japan

IBARAKI, Japan (AP) — Lexi Thompson won the World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup on Sunday, closing with an even-par 72 for a two-stroke victory over Japan's Ayaka Watanabe.

The long-hitting American finished at 13-under 275 at Ibaraki Golf Club in the Japan LPGA Tour major championship. She shot a 65 on Saturday to take a five-stroke lead into the final round.

Thompson won for the first time in Japan. Third in the world ranking, she won the Honda LPGA Thailand in February for her seventh LPGA Tour victory.

Watanabe closed with a 69.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Jeff Maggert and Jesper Parnevik (JEHS'-pur PAR'-nek-vihk) share the lead after two rounds of the Insperity Invitational Champions Tour event. Each will start the final round at 7-under.

BASKETBALL-GARFINKEL OBIT

Howard Garfinkel dies

NEW YORK (AP) — The creator of one of basketball's top summer camps and one of the sports true characters, has died at 86.

Howard Garfinkel died Saturday after being hospitalized with pneumonia according to several close friends. Garfinkel ran Five-Star Camp in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, from 1966 to 2008, a gathering of some of the country's top high school players with college players and coaches serving as counselors.

Garfinkel started "High School Basketball Illustrated," a scouting service of New York-area players in 1965.
