MISSOURI-TURMOIL
President resigns at Mizzou; chancellor to leave at end of year
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Protests by University of Missouri football players and other campus activists have led to a housecleaning on the Columbia campus.
President Tim Wolfe and Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin have announced their resignations with students on campus in open revolt over what they saw as indifference to racial tension at the school. Black student groups had complained for months that Wolfe was unresponsive to racial slurs and other slights on the overwhelmingly white main campus of the state's four-college system.
Wolfe took "full responsibility for the frustration" students expressed and said their complaints were "clear" and "real." Loftin announced that he would step down at the end of the year and shift to leading research efforts.
The complaints came to a head over the weekend, when at least 30 black football players announced that they would not play until the president was gone.
Head football coach Gary Pinkel explained why he supported his players' decision to boycott team activities until the president resigned, saying they were concerned with the health of a graduate student who had not eaten for a week as part of protests against Wolfe.
