Cavs clinch top East seed

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers have wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the NBA's Eastern Conference playoffs following another strong performance by LeBron James.

The Cavs' forward delivered 34 points, six rebounds and six assists before sitting out the fourth quarter of a 109-94 rout of Atlanta. James shot 13 of 16 and helped the Cavaliers take control by scoring 19 points in the third period.

Kyrie Irving dropped in 35 points and Kevin Love added 14 rebounds for Cleveland.

Meanwhile, Dallas wrapped up the seventh seed in the West and put Utah's playoff hopes in serious jeopardy. Dirk Nowitzki hit four 3-pointers and finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the Mavericks' 101-92 triumph at Utah. The Jazz will grab the final West playoff berth if they beat the Lakers on Wednesday and the Rockets lose to the Kings.

The Rockets gained control of the eighth seed as James Harden scored 34 points and Dwight Howard had 19 and eight rebounds in a 129-105 pounding of Minnesota. Trevor Ariza had 21 points for the Rockets, who drained 15 of their 30 3-point attempts.

In other NBA action:

— Kevin Durant scored 34 points and Russell Westbrook had a triple-double by halftime of Oklahoma City's 112-79 laugher against the Los Angeles Lakers. Westbrook finished with 14 assists, 13 points and 10 boards for his league-leading 18th triple-double of the season. Kobe Bryant scored 13 points in the first quarter of his final road game before going scoreless the rest of the way.

— Jeremy Lin delivered 19 of his 25 points while Charlotte outscored the Celtics 39-13 in the second quarter of a 114-110 win at Boston. Kemba Walker scored 18 points for the Hornets, while Al Jefferson and Marvin Williams each had 16.

— Jimmy Butler scored 12 of his 23 points in the last six minutes of Chicago's 121-116 victory at New Orleans. Nikola Mirotic added 20 points and Cristiano Felicio matched his career high with 16 for the Bulls.

— Orlando knocked off Milwaukee 107-98 as Ersan Ilyasova scored 22 points and Mario Hezonja added 19 in the Magic's home finale. Dewayne Dedmon scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Magic finish 23-18 at home.

— Washington was a 120-111 winner at Brooklyn behind Ramon Sessions' 21 points and 12 assists. Marcus Thornton was one of seven Wizards to score in double figures, finishing with 19 points.

— Seth Curry's 20 points and 15 assists propelled Sacramento to a 105-101 win at Phoenix. Kosta Koufos chipped in 19 points and eight boards in the victory.

Birds off to best start in team history

UNDATED (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles were known as the St. Louis Browns the last time the franchise reeled off a season-opening winning streak like this.

The Orioles are 6-0 after Chris Davis launched a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the ninth inning of a 9-7 win over the Red Sox at Boston. The Birds had just squandered leads of 5-3 and 6-5 before Davis went deep off Craig Kimbrel to cap his five-RBI afternoon.

It is the longest season-opening winning streak for the franchise since the 1944 Browns opened 9-0.

Mark Trumbo also smacked a three-run homer as the Orioles ruined the Red Sox's home opener.

David Ortiz was 2-for-5 with an RBI in his final home opener. The Boston designated hitter is retiring after the season.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Jordy Mercer drove in two runs and Gregory Polanco had two of Pittsburgh's six doubles in a 7-4 win over the Tigers in Detroit. Pirates starter and winner Jonathon Niese allowed three earned runs in six innings, including homers by Nick Castellanos and J.D. Martinez.

— St. Louis won its home opener as Michael Wacha scattered four hits while striking out seven over six shutout innings of the Cardinals' 10-1 rout of Milwaukee. Yadier Molina went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Matt Carpenter drove in a pair and rookie Jeremy Hazelbaker went 4-for-4 to raise his average to .526.

— The Chicago Cubs won their home opener by beating Cincinnati 5-3 on Addison Russell's three-run blast in the eighth inning. The Cubs were held hitless by Brandon Finnegan through six innings before David Ross singled and scored on Jason Heyward's two-run single in the seventh.

— Atlanta is 0-6 for the first time since 1988 after Wilson Ramos went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles in Washington's 6-4 triumph against the Braves. Daniel Murphy hit a two-run homer to back a struggling Max Scherzer, who surrendered four runs and six hits in six innings.

— Giancarlo Stanton's two-run homer capped a seven-run second as Florida clobbered the Mets 10-3 in New York. Adeiny Hechavarria had three RBIs and J.T. Realmuto collected three of the Marlins' 15 hits.

— Colby Rasmus socked a two-run homer and Carlos Correa was 3-for-5 with two RBI's in Houston's 8-2 pounding of Kansas City. Collin McHugh worked seven shutout innings in his first start since being tagged for five earned runs in just 1/3 of an inning.

— Minnesota extended the longest season-opening losing streak in franchise history as Austin Jackson poked a two-run single and Todd Frazier added an RBI double in the Chicago White Sox's 4-1 verdict over the 0-7 Twins. Jose Quintana allowed just one run and four hits in six innings to help the White Sox tarnish the Twins' home opener.

— Mike Trout slammed a two-run homer and Nick Tropeano tossed five shutout innings as the Los Angeles Angels earned a 4-1 win at Oakland. Tropeano combined with three relievers on a 10-hitter.

— Rougned Odor was productive in the Rangers' 7-3 win at Seattle, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Prince Fielder drove in two runs and Colby Lewis limited the Mariners to a run and four hits in six frames.

— San Diego blew an early 3-0 lead before Alexi Amarista laid down a squeeze bunt in the seventh inning to push the Padres past the Phillies 4-3 in Philadelphia. Wil Myers smacked a solo homer and Jon Jay hit an RBI double as the Padres improved to 3-1 since being shut out in their first three games.

Tommy John surgery for Doubrant

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland left-hander Felix Doubront will undergo Tommy John surgery as early as Tuesday.

Doubront was projected to be the Athletics' No. 5 starter until he was injured during his final spring training appearance. He went 3-3 with a 5.50 ERA in 16 games with Oakland and Toronto last year.

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball's average game time has slowed during the first week of the season and was back over 3 hours.

The average time of a nine-inning game was 3:04 through the first 79 games of this season, according to STATS. That is up 8 minutes from a 2:56 average for the first 79 games last year.

Cubs acquire lefty Soto, move Schwarber to 60-day DL

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have transferred slugger Kyle Schwarber to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day DL because of a season-ending knee injury. They also acquired left-handed pitcher Giovanni Soto (SOH'-toh) from the Cleveland Indians for cash.

Take Vin Scully Avenue to Dodgers games

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fans can now take Vin Scully Avenue into the main gate of Dodger Stadium.

The city of Los Angeles has renamed a section of roadway running from Sunset Boulevard to Stadium Way in honor of the 88-year-old Hall of Fame announcer.

Scully is set to broadcast the final home opener of his 67-year career on Tuesday. He's retiring at the end of the season.

NCAA puts hold on bowl games

UNDATED (AP) — Enough!

That's the message from the NCAA which is prohibiting the creation of new bowl games for the next three years.

The move comes after three teams with 5-7 records were needed to fill the record number of 40 bowls last season.

The NCAA's football oversight committee last week recommended a three-year moratorium on sanctioning new postseason games and it was approved by the Division I Council.

Another charge against alleged Smith assailant

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Police say they plan to add a new charge against Cardell Hayes, the man accused of killing former Saints player Will Smith following a car accident. A police spokesman said Hayes will be charged with attempted murder or aggravated battery after Smith's wife, Racquel, was shot in the leg.

The spokesman couldn't comment on a statement from Hayes' attorney saying Hayes called 911 shortly before a car crash that police say touched off the deadly shooting. Attorney John Fuller said a hit-and-run driver had rear-ended Hayes, who was trying to catch up to that vehicle and get a license plate number when he ran into Smith's Mercedes SUV late Saturday.

Gordon's latest drug test not entirely clean

UNDATED (AP) — Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon has raised a red flag following a recent NFL-administered drug test.

A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that while Gordon didn't have a positive substance abuse test, a sample collected last month showed Gordon had traces of marijuana and a diluting substance in his system. The level of marijuana was less than the minimum required by the NFL for a positive test.

Gordon was suspended for all of 2015 following a positive test for alcohol.

Lewis gets another extension...Chiefs' DeVito retires at 31

UNDATED (AP) — Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has signed a one-year contract extension through the 2017 season. It's the third straight year he's gotten extra time on his deal after losing in the playoffs.

Lewis has coached the Bengals for the last 13 seasons, a club record. He's 112-94-2 in the regular season and 0-7 in the playoffs, an NFL mark for postseason futility for a coach. The Bengals have lost their opening playoff game each of the last five seasons, also a record.

In other NFL news:

— Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Mike DeVito is retiring after nine NFL seasons. The 31-year-old DeVito had a career-high three sacks last season as the Chiefs rallied from 1-5 to make the playoffs.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-MARYLAND-DRAFT

Stone leaving, Trimble leaning toward NBA

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Maryland is losing at least one more player from its Sweet 16 team.

Freshman center Diamond Stone will enter the NBA draft and sign with an agent after averaging 12.5 points a game last season. He led the Terrapins with 56 blocked shots and earned the Big Ten's newcomer of the year award.

The school also announced that sophomore point guard Melo Trimble will declare for the draft but not hire an agent. Trimble averaged a team-high 14.8 points and 4.9 assists to help the Terps go 27-9 last season.

NHL-COYOTES SHAKE-UP

Maloney out as Coyotes GM

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes have fired general manager Don Maloney after they missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

The team said an interim general manager wouldn't be named at this time, and that the search for a new GM will begin immediately.

Maloney spent the past nine seasons as executive vice president and GM.

Arizona went 35-39-8 this season to finish fourth in the Pacific Division.

Flyers co-founder dies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Flyers co-founder Ed Snider has died at 83 following a two-year battle with cancer.

Snider and Jerry Wolman were awarded the NHL franchise in 1966, one year before Snider took over control of the team. His "Broad Street Bullies" became the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup when they defeated Boston in 1974.

Snider was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988.
