Austin Man Sentenced For Deadly Drive-By Shooting
Austin, MN (KROC-AM News) - An Austin man was sentenced today for a deadly drive-by shooting.
Court records state that 20-year-old Jenup Chop and two other men were arrested in June 2023 after Austin police responded to a report of a traffic crash. It involved a vehicle that had left the road and crashed into a vacant home.

The driver of the crashed vehicle, 25-year-old Gumdel Gilo, was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. The court documents filed in the case indicated two other passengers in the vehicle were transported to Rochester for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds at St. Marys Hospital.
The criminal complaint identified Chop as the alleged gunman. The court document says a man on a motorcycle witnessed the incident and followed an SUV that was seen leaving the crime scene at a high rate of speed. The witness told Austin police that he halted his pursuit after the occupants of the SUV shot at him several times before entering eastbound I-90.
Chop entered into a plea agreement last December and admitted to second-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. He was sentenced today to a total of 37 1/2 years in prison.
One of the two other people charged in the case, 25-year-old Manamany Abella, earlier entered a guilty plea to a charge of aiding and abetting-accomplice after the fact and is scheduled to be sentenced in April. The case against the third defendant, Cham Oman, is still pending.
