Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on Monday concerning a proposed zoning change for a large apartment complex near downtown Rochester.

The Prow Company wants to rezone the former Rochester Bakery property along 11th Avenue Northwest near Civic Center Drive from light industrial to high-density residential. The Rochester Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed the request last month and unanimously recommended its approval.

Preliminary plans submitted by Prow call for a 7 to 8-story building with space for around 200 apartments. The proposed Bakery Flats project also includes 2500 square feet of commercial space and 140 covered parking spaces.

The current building on the property was constructed in the late 1920s and operated for many years as a Wonder Bread bakery. After the commercial bakery closed in the mid-1980s, it was purchased and renovated by the Prow Company. The Minnesota Workforce Center was a previous tenant and the building now houses a variety of offices and businesses.
