Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The soggy forecast for the weekend has led to the cancellation of a free and public grand opening celebration in the Rochester area.

A brand-new amphitheater has been added to the numerous amenities offered at Chester Woods Park. Olmsted County officials say the outdoor entertainment venue is expected to be "a focal point for cultural and recreational activities for years to come."

A news release says the amphitheater project was funded by the Greater Minnesota Parks and Trails Commission. It features rock benches installed into the slope of a natural seating bowl that overlooks the Bear Creek Reservoir. The rock benches can seat about 100 people but there are also open grassy areas for people using blankets or chairs. It will be available for rental beginning next Monday.

The completion of the project was set to be celebrated this Saturday during a six hour long grand opening event. Four musical and dance acts had been scheduled to perform during the celebratory event, which was supposed to take place from 10 AM until 4 PM.

In announcing the grand opening plans earlier in the week, Olmsted County Park's Director Karlin Ziegler stated, "We are thrilled to unveil this facility, which will serve as a hub for artistic expression and outdoor enjoyment." He went on to say, "the amphitheater complements our existing amenities and enhances the park’s appeal as a destination for families, major enthusiasts, and artists."

Unfortunately, the threat of inclement weather is enough to scuttle the plans for the grand opening event. The National Weather Service is currently forecasting a good chance of heavy rain showers impossible thunderstorms through most of the day on Saturday.
