Bulldogs Beat Gophers in Overtime

DULUTH, MN (gophersports.com) – A back-and-forth battle of in-state rivals ended with the No. 3 Gopher Hockey program falling to No. 6 Minnesota Duluth 4-3 in overtime on Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.
The Gophers (0-1-0, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) picked up goals from Tommy Novak, Scott Reedy and Jack Ramsey in the loss while Eric Schierhorn made 40 saves in goal for the Maroon & Gold.

The Bulldogs (1-0-0, 0-0-0-0 NCHC) jumped out to an early lead in the first with a power-play goal from Mikey Anderson before Minnesota responded with a pair of tallies in the second stanza.

Novak evened the game at 13:26 off a feed from Tyler Sheehy before Reedy claimed the lead with a power-play goal from Casey Mittelstadt and Rem Pitlick at 18:26. Reedy and Mittelstadt notched their first career points on the play.

Riley Tufte scored a power-play tally for the Bulldogs just 23 seconds into the third period before the teams exchanged even-strength goals less than a minute apart later in the period. Ramsey fired a one-timer home from Ryan Norman and Darian Romanko at 3:09 only for Joey Anderson to score 40 seconds later in what proved to be the overtime-forcing goal.

Minnesota Duluth, which outshot the Gophers 44-21 in the game, notched the game winner in the added session off the stick of Parker Mackay at 1:45.

The Gophers close out the 2017 Ice Breaker Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 7 with a 4 p.m. CT matchup against Union.
