On July 30, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced the Safe Learning Plan for the upcoming school year, which gave individual school districts the opportunity to decide if they will adopt an in-person, distance, or hybrid learning model based on local viral activity and recommendations from the state.

Rochester Public Schools announced their plan on August 7, and Byron Public Schools is the latest Southeast Minnesota district to announce its base learning plan for the 2020-21 school year. School officials announced today that the Byron School Board has approved the in-person model for elementary students (K-5th grade) and hybrid learning for secondary students (6th-12th grade).

If families do not feel comfortable sending their children to attend school on campus and would like to continue with full-distance learning, the district is providing an alternative to face-to-face instruction called the Family Flex Option.

No matter which option you are choosing for your children, all families will need to enroll their students into a learning model by August 16 by completing this form. A separate form must be completed for each student.

“Though this is our base learning plan, the situation could rapidly change to other learning models,” Superintended Joey Page said. These learning models will remain in effect unless the school and public health officials find it necessary to implement a different Learning Model in the best interest of students and staff.

Byron Public schools define the in-person and hybrid models as follows:

In-Person Learning Model
In-person learning for all students. In this planning scenario, schools should create as
much space between students and teachers as is feasible during the day, but will not
be held strictly to enforcing 6 feet of social distancing during primary instructional time
in the classroom.

Hybrid Learning Model
A hybrid learning model is designed to integrate face-to-face and distance learning
activities so that they reinforce, complement, and elaborate on one another, instead of
treating the online component as an add-on or duplicate of what is taught in the
classroom. During classroom instruction time, students can be engaged in authentic,
collaborative learning experiences. The distance learning components can include
multimedia-enhanced content, learning practice, and channels for ongoing discussion.
We must limit the overall number of people in school facilities and on transportation
vehicles to 50% maximum occupancy. Sufficient social distancing with at least 6 feet
between people must occur at all times. If distancing cannot be achieved in a space or
on a transportation vehicle, the number of occupants must be reduced.
