Candidate’s Death Prompts Special Election For 2nd Dist. Congress
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The November general election is still over a month away but a special election has already been ordered in Minnesota's Second Congressional District, which includes portions of southeastern Minnesota.
Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon issued a statement this afternoon after receiving reports about the death of Adam Weeks, who was the Legal Marijuana Now Party candidate for the Second Congressional District seat now held by Democrat Angie Craig. Simon says state law requires the scheduling of a special election if a major party nominee dies within 79 days of election day. The required special election is automatically set on the second Tuesday of February.
His campaign website says Weeks was a 2000 graduate of Northfield High School and a vegetable farmer in Goodhue County. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
His passing leaves the incumbent, Democrat Angie Craig, and Republican Tyler Kistner on the ballot. It is unclear if the Legalize Marijuana Now party will nominate another candidate for the special election.
