Preston, MN (KROC AM News) - There was a large turnout at Thursday night’s informational meeting in Preston concerning the recent discovery of two CWD-infected deer in southeast Minnesota.

The deer were killed by hunters last month near Lanesboro. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources sampled nearly 3,000 deer after the discovery and no other cases were found.

The DNR then developed a plan to prevent the disease from spreading.

The plan includes the establishment of a disease management zone, a special hunt, landowner shooting permits and an aerial population survey. The DNR has set a goal of 1,200 deer to be harvested during the special hunt that will take place between Dec 31 and Jan 15 in permit area 603.

Chronic wasting disease is a fatal brain disease to deer, elk and moose but is not known to affect human health. Prior to this discovery, the disease has only been found in Minnesota in one wild deer harvested near Pine Island in 2010.
