Captain Tim Parkin said emergency responders were called to the crash around 5:45 p.m. just north of Broadway’s intersection with Ridge Dr. Northeast. Three vehicles were involved in the crash

Parkin said the preliminary investigation indicates a southbound vehicle was waiting to turn into a driveway and a southbound pick-up truck was slowing for the vehicle that was waiting to turn. The pick-up truck was then struck from behind by a southbound Honda Accord causing the truck to enter the northbound lane where it was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Parkin said the truck driver, described as a 68-year-old man, had to be extricated from the pick-up. He was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital by Mayo One in critical condition. Parkin said the man was in surgery and is expected to survive his injuries.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, described as a 33-year-old woman, had a 5-year-old boy in her vehicle. They were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for observation and treatment of minor injuries, Parkin said.

Authorities identified the Accord driver as 24-year-old Dylan Yocum of Houston, MN. Parkin said deputies at the scene detected an odor of marijuana from Yocum and called a drug-recognition officer to the scene. He was then arrested after interacting with the drug officer.

Parkin said Yocum also has an active arrest warrant for failing to appear in a Wabasha County Court case. Yocum was evaluated at St. Mary’s Hospital then booked into the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center on suspicion of criminal vehicular operation and on the active arrest warrant.

Parkin said investigators obtained a warrant to draw a sample of Yocum’s blood that’s since been sent to the Minnesota BCA for further testing. He said the next steps in the case are pending the blood draw results and findings from the Forensic Mapping Until which was called to the scene to further investigate the crash.
