Dog Perished in Southwest Rochester House Fire

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A family's dog died today after suffering from severe smoke inhalation in a fire Wednesday afternoon at a home in southwest Rochester's Institute Hills neighborhood.

A news release from the Rochester Fire Department says firefighters responded to the home at 2512 Crest Lane Southwest around 1:30 PM after receiving a report of an attached garage on fire and found the structure was engulfed in flames which were spreading to the house. The caller also reported everyone was out of the home, but a dog was missing.

The firefighters knocked down the flames enough to allow for a search of the house, where another fire crew was able to quickly extinguish the flames that had entered the second floor. The missing dog was then found in a second-floor bedroom and was rushed outside for treatment, but did not survive.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and an estimate of the dollar loss was not provided.

The news release notes the firefighting efforts were complicated because the home was not near any fire hydrants and water tankers were needed to deliver water to the scene. The long driveway at the property also impacted the operation.
