The young Minnesotan was missing since July 12. Authorities believed he was fatally injured when he fell into rapids while attempting to cross a creek, which is just southwest of Billings in southern Montana.
Officials say the young man likely became trapped underwater near where he fell into the creek.
Some items that apparently belonged to him were earlier recovered about 500 yards downstream, a news release issued by the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend said.

Authorities identified the hiker as Dylan Honnell. The young Rogers man was a sophomore at Montana State University.

A news release issued on Wednesday by Red Lodge Fire Rescue says crews found his body completely submerged under fast-moving water of East Rosebud Creek on Tuesday.

A skilled helicopter hovered over the rushing water and lowered a rescue crew member, who recovered Honnell’s body on Wednesday, the news release says.
A coroner then met the helicopter after the recovery to begin the process of bringing Honnell’s body home.
