East Center St. Reconstruction Starts Monday in Rochester, Detour Routes Planned

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A project to reconstruct one of the main roads in and out of downtown Rochester gets started this week.

The construction plans call for the work to be completed in three phases. Detours will be in place during the road work.

The project's plans call for reconstructing the roadway to include space for parking, bike lanes and sidewalk improvements to bring the corridor inline with Americans with Disability Act requirements, according to the project website. 

Crews will also replace infrastructure below the street that has been in place since the early 1900’s and the addition of storm sewer and stormwater management facilities. 

East Center St. Reconstruction Project Starts Monday in Rochester

East Center St. will be closed from 6th Ave. SE through 7th Ave. SE/NE starting Monday. 

The City of Rochester Public Works Department is anticipating the closure to be finished by July 22. The closure includes the intersections of both streets. 

On June 23, crews will close East Center St. from east of 7th Ave. SE/NE through its intersection with 9th Ave. SE.

That closure is expected to remain in place until September 11. 

Motorists who use East Center St. will be detoured south to 4th St. SE via Broadway Ave. and 11th Ave. SE during the road closures in the first two phases. 

Work on Mini Roundabout Begins in Late July

The third and final phase of the project involves installing a mini-roundabout at the intersection of East Center St. and 11th Ave. NE/SE. 

That closure is scheduled to begin on July 29 and end by September 23. Traffic will be detoured onto 7th St. NE, North Broadway Ave., 4th St. SE and 19th Ave. SE. 

4th St. SE Closure Also Starts Monday

There will be another road closure for motorists in southeast Rochester to contend with starting Monday. 4th St. SE will be closed between 19th Ave. and 16th Ave. SE. 

An official detour route has not been posted for that road closure.
