Former Minnesota Doctor Sentenced to Prison for Tax Crime
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News)- A former Minnesota Doctor has been sentenced to federal prison after being convicted of tax crimes.
That's according to a news release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota. He was convicted on charges connected to what is described as an “an extensive tax-evasion scheme.”
The news release says 62-year-old Joseph David Meyer of Roseau earned a sizable taxable income from his work as a doctor and as a landlord for rental properties.
From 2000-2018, Meyer challenged his tax obligations in court multiple times. Court documents accuse Meyer of concealing his taxable income, and suing his rental tenants for complying with legitimate IRS levies.
Federal prosecutors say Meyer’s actions resulted in a $484,164 tax loss. Meyer pleaded guilty to a count of tax evasion in January of 2022.
He was sentenced to four months in federal prison that will be followed by six months of home confinement. He’s also been ordered to pay full restitution.
