Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Former Olmsted County Sheriff Steve VonWald has passed away.

According to a Facebook post by the Sheriff's Office, VonWald died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He was 74 years old.

VonWald served as Olmsted County Sheriff from 2008 until 2011. He was appointed to the position by the Olmsted County Board to succeed former Sheriff Steve Borchardt.

VonWald joined the Sheriff's Office in 1974. The Facebook posts says he filled a long list of jobs within the department over his long career, including patrol deputy, Detective, Investigations Captain, Patrol Captain, Director of the Adult Detention Center, and LEC director.

His daughter, Melinda is currently a member of the Sheriff's Office and serves as Investigations Lieutenant.  His father, Chuck VonWald was the Olmsted County Sheriff for two decades before his retirement in 1990.

Macken Funeral Home is handling the arrangements, a visitation will be held on March 6 from 5-8 PM in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life is planned on the afternoon and evening of March 7 at the Rochester Eagles Club.
