First responders were dispatched to the fatal crash Friday night. Reports from the scene indicated a semi and bicycle had collided at an intersection in St. Joseph, which is just west of St. Cloud.

On Monday night, the Sartell Police Department published a Facebook post indicating the bicyclist struck by the semi was Bob Ringstrom, who previously was the city’s Police Chief.

The post reads in part, “We were saddened to hear that Retired Police Chief Bob Ringstrom was killed while riding his bicycle over the weekend.Bob was a respected leader to his staff and the community. He remained connected with much of our staff after retirement and he will be missed.”

The Sartell Police Department credited Ringstrom with creating officer assignments inside of the central-Minnesota community’s schools and leading the department through an enhancement of profession standards.

His obituary says he retired from the role of Police Chief in 2004. Prior to service in law enforcement, the North Dakota native served as a Marine from 1968-1974.

He was 74 and is survived by his wife, daughters, grandchildren and siblings. His funeral is scheduled for Friday afternoon in Sartell.
