Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -Four Rochester people spent New Year’s Day in jail after being involved in an assault that sent one person to the hospital.

Officers were called to a residence in the 700 block of 9th Ave SE around 2:30 AM Tuesday to check a report of a fight.

They discovered a man and woman had been knocked out and were on the ground outside the home. The 30-year-old male victim had been hit over the head with a shovel and assaulted. He was taken to St. Marys for treatment of a broken nose and possible concussion.

The female victim told officers she had dropped her kids off at the house Monday night while she and the male victim went out. When they returned, the male victim was inside when an argument broke out. He decided to leave and told police that’s when he was attacked outside the home. The woman was attacked when she tried to intervene.

Arrested for being involved in the assault were 29-year-old Maurice Hegwood, 50-year-old Saadie Sanders, 59-year-old Timothy Poindexter, and 32-year-old Deusten White. Police say Hegwood is the one who hit the victim with a shovel.

It's not known why the victims were attacked.
