Ann Arbor, MI (KROC-AM News) - The second ranked Minnesota Gophers opened play in the Big Ten Softball tournament at Ann Arbor, Michigan today with a 5-1 win over Northwestern.

The top-seeded University of Minnesota squad enjoyed an outstanding performance on the mound by the 2017 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year. Sara Groenewegen struck out 11 batters as she put together the 8th no hitter of her college career. Big Ten officials have indicated it may be the first no-hitter in the history of the tournament.

Freshman catcher Kendyl Lindaman, who was just honored as the Big Ten Player of the Year and the conference Freshman of the Year scored a couple RBI with a single as the Gophers put up three runs in the 6th inning.

Rochester’s Sara Macken, who collected the Big Ten Sportsman of the Year Award, had a hit and drove in a run in the victory.

The Gophers will play in the semi-finals Saturday afternoon.
