MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota will retire the jersey of former men's basketball star Randy Breuer.

The university announced Thursday that Breuer will be honored at a halftime ceremony at Williams Arena during the game against Illinois Saturday, when his No. 45 jersey will be hung from the rafters.

The 7-foot-3 Breuer helped lead the Gophers to the 1982 Big Ten championship and was voted the team's MVP in 1983 after leading the Gophers in points, rebounds and blocks for a third straight season. Breuer is third on the program's all-time scoring list.

The native of Lake City, Minnesota, went on to an 11-year career in the NBA. He was a first-round draft pick by the Milwaukee Bucks and later spent three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
