Transformational Rochester Park Improvement Project Receives Massive Funding Boost

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A Rochester park is set to undergo a transformation thanks to a major federal grant awarded to the city.

The City of Rochester received a more than $1.5 million federal Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership grant through the National Park Service.

The award covers more than half the cost of the $3 million project.

Project to Improve Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Rochester Awarded Massive Federal Grant

The grant was awarded to Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Park at 1738 East Center St. A news release issued by the city says the project calls for multiple improvements and additions to the park. 

The additions and improvements include: 

Resurfacing of basketball courts; 

Installation of accessible playground equipment; 

Development of a splash pad; 

Building of a large picnic shelter; 

Expansion of the community garden; 

Construction of a new restroom; 

New lighting at the basketball courts; 

Dropping of electrical connections in a plaza area where food trucks can park; and 

Introduction of WiFi services. 

City officials say the next step will be determining a project timeline and gathering additional input and feedback from the community.
