High school athletes dreaming of a state championship can keep working toward that goal in 2021. On Thursday the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) agreed to a plan to hold state meets and tournaments for winter sports. Certain aspects will be different from previous years including some venues, and attendance will be limited.

The first sports to hold state competitions will be alpine and Nordic skiing March 10 and 12. Dance will hold a single day of jazz on March 12 and high-kick on March 13. They will be staged at Edina High School rather than Target Center.

The boys swimming and diving meet will be March 18-20 at the University of Minnesota. Diving is on the first day with swimming finals each of the next two with no preliminaries.

The wrestling tournament March 25-27 will have each class with a one-day event for team and individual. The MSHSL overview states four teams and eight individuals per weight class will qualify for state. A regional qualifying round March 13 will pare the field of eight teams per class to four. The venue for the state meet is yet to be determined.

Gymnastics will be a single-day meet for each class with Class A March 26 and Class AA March 27 at Champlin Park High School. Four teams will compete per session.

Hockey and basketball tournament will run concurrently for girls and boys. No consolation or third place games will be held.

Girls hockey dates are March 26 and 27, April 1 and 3. Boys will play March 30 and 31, April 2 and 3 at Xcel Energy Center. Twenty games of each gender will be on TV.

Boys and girls basketball will be March 30 and 31, plus April 6 through 10. Finals will be at Target Center. Twenty-four games for each gender will air on TV.

Adaptive floor hockey will only have a practice and training season this year.

Winter state tournaments came to an abrupt halt during the girls basketball event last winter and several boys sections did not finish. The entire spring sports season was canceled in 2020. Most fall sports held playoffs but none had a state tournament. Volleyball was cut off before sections.
