Under current Minnesota law, Minnesota Statutes, sections 609.75 and 609.76, sports betting is illegal.

Gambling on sports is legal in nearly 40 states and very popular. According to Pew Research survey from 2022, around one-in-five U.S. adults (19%) said they had personally bet money on sports in some way in the last 12 months.

38 States Offer Legal Sports Betting - Will Minnesota Legalize It This Year?

Senator Jeremy Miller from Winona told WCCO that he has a sports betting bill he will introduce on the first day of the Minnesota legislative session. Senator John Marty of Roseville has opposed legalizing it up until now but is open to approving it if some protections are added to the bill.

Fox 9 says Marty would, “like to restrict bets on sports with players mostly under the age of 21 and he wants gamblers to have to choose ahead of time how much they’re willing to lose over a certain time frame.”

Pew Research found that “a majority of adults (57%) say it is neither a good nor bad thing for society, while about a third (34%) say it is a bad thing. Only 8% say it is a good thing for society.”
