Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A large spike in gas prices that are expected to hit Minnesota and other states in the Midwest is underway in Rochester

A report from the website GasBuddy published Thursday warned drivers in the region of a massive spike in prices. The article cites sources that have indicated a refinery outage could cause prices to rise $0.50 to $1 in a short period of time. 

As of Friday morning, Gas Buddy has received reports of regular unleaded being sold at $4.09 at at least four Rochester gas stations. Other gas stations in the area are showing prices of stations at $3.69.

The price for a gallon of unleaded in communities surrounding Rochester range from $3.59 to $4.09 per gallon. GasBuddy says prices throughout the midwest have risen by about $1 in the past week.

The report says states that are expected to experience the increase are Oklahoma, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Kansas. The price spike is expected to continue throughout the weekend.

As of Friday morning the average price for a gallon of unleaded in Minnesota is $3.74. The nationwide average is $3.80.

Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
